Same Relationship, Different Character

If love felt unpredictable growing up, peace will feel uncomfortable now.
If you had to earn it then, you’ll try to earn it again.

That’s the pattern.

It explains you. It doesn’t excuse you.

Trying to get back in the swing of things. Bare with me :) In the meantime just a little thought after family dinner Sunday.

Ten kids. Two sets. One family that nobody could have drawn on a map ahead of time. Here is what nobody tells you about building a family that builds itself and what I do to keep it all connected.

People say “be consistent” with kids who struggle with ADHD or behavior.

But if your approach is not working, being consistent just means consistently ineffective.

At some point you have to change the strategy.

Parents of ADHD kids hear the same thing over and over.

"You just need to discipline them more."
"If that was my kid..."

Well ya know what.

Kids with ADHD often know the rule. They was to follow the rules. They want to be "good."

Their brain struggles to stop the impulse. The impulse for emotions, thoughts, actions...so many things.

Discipline alone does not fix skill gaps.

Parents who live this know how exhausting it can be.
The repeat of life.

If you are raising an ADHD kid, what is the most frustrating advice people give you?

Strong kids get labeled difficult fast.

They ask too many questions.
They challenge rules.
They push back when something does not make sense.

So adults assume the problem is the child.

But sometimes that kid is not being difficult.

Sometimes that kid is thinking.

Some kids follow every rule without question.

Other kids need to understand the reason first.

Those kids can wear you out as a parent. They question everything.

But those same kids often grow into adults who do not blindly follow the crowd.

If you are raising one of those kids, you know exactly what I mean.

Is your kid the rule follower or the rule challenger?

Some kids challenge every rule, every instruction, every boundary.
Those are often the kids people label as the problem.

But sometimes that kid is not trying to be disrespectful.

Sometimes that kid just refuses to not be heard.

Strong kids need guidance.
Not crushing.

If you have one of those kids, you know exactly what I mean.

Is your kid the rule follower or the rule challenger?

Sometimes parenting looks like this.

Standing on a ladder. Holding something heavy. Trying to figure it out as you go.

And for real, that is what most of parenting feels like too.

I used to think good parents never lost their temper.

Then I had a husband and kids.

Now I think good parents are the ones who go back and say
“I should not have talked to you like that.”

Some of us grew up in houses where adults never apologized.

Breaking those pattern sometimes looks like three awkward words.

“I was wrong.”

Did your parents ever apologize to you growing up?
