Before Terra Frma, I was (and still am) a life coach. I specialized in resistance and resilience — my job was literally helping people do the things they kept avoiding.

And I still put off getting my own family prepared for years.

Here's what I've learned about procrastination, professionally and personally: it's rarely laziness. It's usually fear, dressed up as a to-do list that feels too big to start.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires is affecting air quality across 17+ states this week — some areas seeing levels twice the federal “hazardous” threshold. Even if you’re not seeing hazy skies today, this is a good reminder of how wildfire smoke can travel hundreds of miles from the source.

A few things you can do if Air Quality drops where you are:

🔸 Check your local Air Quality Index before heading outside — don’t just go by what the sky looks like
🔸 If AQI is in the unhealthy range, move outdoor plans indoors, especially for kids, older adults, and anyone with respiratory or heart conditions
🔸 Close windows and vents, and switch your car and home AC to recirculate mode
🔸 If you must be outside, an N95 mask actually helps — a regular cloth mask doesn’t filter out the tiny particles in wildfire smoke
🔸 Keep an eye on how you feel — headache, cough, or chest tightness are signs to get to cleaner air

Pay close attention to evacuation levels.

Remember — you can always evacuate early, and we highly encourage it.

Evacuation levels exist for a reason. They are not suggestions. They are the result of trained people watching fire behavior in real time, making their best calculation about risk.

If you have prepared your home to survive without you — cleared defensible space, closed windows and vents, moved vehicles out — there is nearly always little reason to stay.

Your home can be rebuilt. Your family cannot be replaced.

A wildfire can travel a mile in under two minutes under the right conditions. The time to leave is before that moment arrives.

I was solo parenting. My husband was away for work. I kept driving up the hill to watch the two plumes of smoke, trying to figure out how close it was getting.

The sky was beautiful and terrifying at the same time.

I had a million questions and few answers in one place. What do I pack? When do I leave? Do I get the irrigation running? I was frantically searching online, going from site to site, and none of it felt simple or clear.

I told myself I'd get properly prepared "once I had more time."

I was a trained life coach specializing in resistance and resilience. I knew exactly what I was doing. I was avoiding.

The fire was contained days later. But the experience stayed with me. And when I found myself quietly avoiding trips to the Oregon coast because I was afraid of being unprepared for an earthquake — I knew it was time to stop waiting.

I built the Disaster Deck because the product I needed didn't exist. Clear. Simple. Expert. Pocket-sized.
