Where do you find the best version of yourself? Where does your body release tension? Where do you notice how it feels to be “home”?
Where does your breath fall into sync with your heart, mind and body and bring you into a sacred space?

There is a class of molecules in forest air that I bet you have never heard of.

They are called phytoncides. Volatile organic compounds released by trees, especially evergreens like cedar and pine, as a chemical defense against bacteria and fungi.

When humans walk through forests, they breathe these compounds in.

In a 2010 review and a series of studies, Dr. Qing Li and colleagues at Nippon Medical School in Tokyo measured the immune systems of adults before and after multi day forest walks, what the Japanese call shinrin yoku, or forest bathing.

Compared to walks in matched urban environments, forest walks were associated with substantially elevated counts and activity of natural killer cells, a key class of immune cells involved in defense against viruses and tumor surveillance.

These changes lasted, in some studies, for up to 30 days after the walk.

Trees, while standing perfectly still, are quietly contributing to your immune system.

The research is still developing, and not every study has shown the same effect size. But the broader pattern, that forest environments calm the nervous system and may strengthen immune function, has held up across many trials.

When was the last time you let yourself stand under a tree and just breathe?

The root cause of all the issues. Roots are so important. When most plants sprout, they send out roots first. The foundation is the origin story. The soil, the climate, the other beings that surround new life. When I saw this tree with roots exposed by the foundation eroding away beneath her, I thought about how important that foundation was for her continued growth and health. Then I thought how that applies to me as well. There are endless signs and messages in nature. Forest bathing allows you to slow down and contemplate them and how the Earth is speaking to you. To us. The root cause is the heart of the matter. To know yourself, return to your roots.
