The members of FOP lodge 2 represent the rank and file of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Recently there has been some back and forth regarding an incident in which an individual whose status in the country is in question was arrested on a charge of Misdemeanor Motor Vehicle Homicide. The question is who flubbed the booking of this individual that allowed him to have such a low bond.
It is incumbent that when a mistake is made ownership of that mistake becomes a learning point so mistakes of this nature do not happen in the future.
Anyone who knows the booking process at Douglas County Corrections knows that an individual Deputy or Officer inputs a conversion code and that code is correlated to the charge and the bond is automatically set by the system.
Where the confusion starts with our members is how the blame for this was thrown back at the Deputy that did the booking. The statement released by Douglas County Corrections seems to want to make the office of the Sheriff and his Deputies the heart of the issue.
There seems to be no real evidence that this is the case. It appears to us that it is an obfuscation of the facts behind this incident and an inability to admit fault.
We would welcome a sit down with officials of Douglas County Corrections so they can provide empirical evidence as to where the fault lies in this incident.
State statue makes it clear that the director of corrections gets this bond schedule from the seated county court judges and it is his or her job to make their system conform to the schedule.
The safety of the citizens of Douglas County is highest priority of our membership and to have an individual set free due to an error of this magnitude would be devastating.
