Sometimes the best medicine has four paws. šŸ¾ā¤ļø

There’s something therapeutic about puppies.

They don’t care about your diagnosis, your medication list, your bad day, or everything waiting for you tomorrow.

They just know you’re there.
And you have a lap.
And you definitely look like someone who needs puppy snuggles.

This sweet moment comes from the residents at Lakewood Assisted Living and the Dubois County Humane Society bringing a little puppy love together. ā¤ļø

This is what community looks like.

Healing isn’t always about prescriptions. Sometimes it’s connection. Sometimes it’s companionship. Sometimes it’s holding two puppies and forgetting, even for a few minutes, about everything else.

And I’d say these two little therapists understood the assignment. 🐶🐶

Thank you to the Residents at Lakewood Assisted Living and the Dubois County Humane Society for creating moments like this.

Possible side effects of puppy therapy: smiling, snuggling, and an uncontrollable desire to take one home.

I'm currently treating so many ladies with GSM who thought "I'm just prone to UTIs" THEY WERE NOT BEING TREATED FOR THE CORRECT ISSUE!!!

Urinary tract infections put people in the hospital and kill them – this is not a hangnail. This is a big deal!!

It's not just the UTI... it's actually treating WHY she continues to have them. (ie dry va**nal tissue...Formerly called "va**nal atrophy" or "senile va**na" by the way 😬)

GSM does not improve on its own and tends to worsen over time if left untreated, making early intervention critical to prevent permanent tissue and bladder changes!! Yes I'm talking to you, with the dry vag.

Vaginal estrogen (topical estradiol) is equivalent in efficacy to the common overactive bladder medications. And is safe, acts locally without entering the bloodstream in clinically significant amounts, and serves as preventative healthcare.

So if you, your mom, your sister, your aunt, your friend have these symptoms... Don't wait! Jump on this now to prevent worsening issues in the future

Sometimes the zebra really is a zebra. šŸ¦“

A patient came to me after years of being dismissed. She had been labeled a pain seeker, a malingerer, and told in different ways that maybe "it was anxiety/all in her head."

But she had a lot of symptoms. And they didn’t feel random.

So I went back. Took more time. I reviewed more than a decade of her records—labs, imaging, specialist notes, testing, everything I could get my hands on.

The pattern mattered: joint hypermobility, chronic pain, dysautonomia, multiple body systems involved, and a concerning family history.

My suspicion was that we were dealing with an underlying genetic condition.

Then came the next obstacle: she has Medicaid.

That’s where my partnership with GeneDx became incredibly valuable. We fought for the testing—and we got it covered.

Several weeks later, the results came back.

I called her.

ā€œGood news, bad news situation. We found an answer.ā€

Her testing identified a pathogenic genetic variant, and the associated clinical picture fit what she had been living with for years.

She exhaled.

ā€œI’m relieved. I’ve lived this for decades, and now I have an answer. A real answer.ā€

I told her, ā€œI know. There is not be a cure, but now we have a name for what is happening—and that matters.ā€

In medicine, we’re taught:

ā€œWhen you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.ā€

That’s good advice most of the time.

But now, most of my patients are zebras.

And I’m becoming pretty good at finding them (if I can toot my horn a little)

Thank you, GeneDx, for partnering with me to help care for my patients—young and old—and for helping make answers possible when the easy answers have already failed.

This is one of those Facebook memories that hits me right in the heart every time it pops up. 🄹

Back in 2017, I received the Outstanding Young DO award from the Indiana Osteopathic Association. I was working in the Emergency Department at Good Samaritan at the time, and the Vincennes newspaper wrote an article about me.

Years later, the family of one of my former patients was going through her belongings after she passed away.

And they found my newspaper article.

She had saved it with her keepsakes. 😭

I honestly think about my former patients often—both those who are gone and those who are still around.

Sometimes patients tell me that I made a difference in their lives by being their doctor.

But what they probably don't realize is how much they've made my life fuller, too.

Every story I've been trusted with. Every hard season I've been allowed to walk through with someone. Every person who has let me into a little piece of their life. 🧩

That stays with me.

I tried really hard to become the kind of doctor who could put on a tough exterior and keep everything neatly separated.

Yeah... that didn't work. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø (ie the burnout years)

I care about my people. Deeply.

And I believe hugs can start the healing of a whole lot of things.

So, if you need a doctor who listens, cares—and yes, gives hugs when you need one—

Trouble getting your patches?

I stockpile at Weisman Medical. Which means if you are a member, I specifically buy your medication to keep on hand in my pharmacy JUST FOR YOU

I personally prefer Climara and Dotti for estradiol patches compared to other generics.

I work extra hard to keep my peoples doses available bc no one wants to see Mom without her HRT!!
