An unexpected event, such as a stroke, often causes people to reflect on a life that may never be exactly the same while adapting to a new reality of making plans for a different future. DVSC's history of Advocacy began in early 1995 and involved influencing physicians, pre-hospital personnel, and all interested allied
health care professionals to the sensitive needs of stroke patients and their families. The scope now has evolved to influencing public health policy on all levels of government. Over the years, DVSC's volunteer membership has acted both independently and in coalition with other constituent groups and public officials so that their related services have become more accessible and affordable to all that need them. DVSC's advocacy work has included successful federal, state, and local efforts to ensure that community-based services remain an option, even in the era of managed care. Acting on the knowledge that stroke survivors are best served in the community, the organization has stayed in the forefront of the movement for optimal stroke advocacy. The DVSC works regionally and beyond to continually improve services for stroke survivors. Unfortunately, many stroke survivors and their families are not aware of or many not be receiving appropriate treatment, social support and the legal referrals they need in order to optimally function in a community environment. The Delaware Valley Stroke Council is here to help you reintegrate into your community.
