Tango Therapy Project

Tango Therapy Project We aim to provide therapeutic benefit, improve quality of life, spark joy, and promote social connection through Argentine tango.

There is a robust body of scientific research demonstrating tango’s unique benefits for people with Parkinson's Disease (PD), as well as older individuals and people affected by other motor and neurological disorders, and mental and physical conditions. We aim to share these benefits more widely by bringing adapted tango programs to people who might not otherwise experience this unique art form.

Co-Executive Director Carolyn Merritt and Board member Dr. Alexandra Pfister presented a poster at the recent World Parkinson Congress in Phoenix, AZ. Alex and Carolyn performed in the opening ceremony dance choreographed by Pamela Quinn, with a group of 36 including people with Parkinson’s, care partners, researchers, and dance and somatics instructors (including our great friend and collaborator, Judith Sachs of Anyone Can Move)!

May is Stroke Awareness Month. At Tango Therapy Project, we’re highlighting the power of adapted tango as we prepare for our upcoming pilot program for people who have experienced stroke. Tango is a welcoming, movement-based social dance that supports connection, balance, and confidence while creating community through shared movement.

We’re excited to launch this pilot program in Philadelphia and invite those interested in volunteering to learn more and apply. Together, we can help bring meaningful, accessible movement opportunities to stroke survivors and others in our community.
