We spend a great deal of time learning how to work on other people’s bodies. Techniques, protocols, assessment frameworks: these are the visible curriculum of a practitioner’s training. But the bodyworker’s own system, their nervous system, their energy field, their proprioceptive awareness, is deeply involved in every treatment.

When your own system is flowing freely, aligned and calibrated, that quality is present in the room and in your touch. Treatments have a quality that clients feel and respond to. Your presence itself becomes a resource.

Conversely, when your system is restricted or depleted, treatments can feel mechanical, clients don’t release as deeply, and you finish the day more exhausted than the work alone explains. This isn’t a character flaw or a lack of dedication. It’s a systems dynamic. And it has a systems solution.

Developing your own energy system — consciously and progressively — is how a practitioner addresses this at the root level. It is, in the deepest sense, professional development: not adding to your toolkit, but developing the instrument that uses every tool you have.

Watch a river flowing and you’ll feel something moving inside of you too. A river isn’t just water - it’s water and current and fish and stones and silt and light, all held within the contour of the riverbed, all part of one streaming channel of life force.

The spine works the same way.

What we call the Governing Vessel isn’t one thing, it’s a convergence. The vertebrae. The spinal cord. The meninges. The cerebrospinal fluid. The chakras. The meridian current itself. All travelling the same central corridor, all in constant interchange.

This is the body’s river. And like any river, when it flows freely, everything downstream is nourished.

Want to join in on a simple new idea that could help us all touch family & friends more? It’s called the Friday Five and here’s how it works:
Every Friday take at least five minutes to do some bodywork on someone you love. A partner, a parent, a child, a grandchild, a friend. Whoever is nearby and could use a little care. If you can’t get a person, work on your dog or cat. OR work on yourself (some Do-In, some meridian stretches, self adjustment work or chakra work.... whatever you like).
No treatment plan. No full session. Just commit to at least five minutes. Pick anything you know how to do. It very well might turn into a longer treatment once you get started, but it doesn’t need to. Even five minutes can reset how someone feels AND refresh something in the relationship that goes way beyond the physical.
Bodywork with the people we love isn’t just healthy, it’s a beautiful way to spend time together that will enhance the quality of your connection.
Simple. Easy. Find a person, lay them down, and do a little bodywork.
