Two years ago, my husband and I nearly killed a tree in the backyard of our new home in the Southern California desert.

Due to a series of poor decisions and unfortunate events our tree dropped nearly all its leaves and stood there looking dead.

As my mentor Tami Stackelhouse said-I think a lot of us know that feeling from the inside.

You were managing. Then life did something nobody could have planned for (hello, fibromyalgia). Decisions get made — by you, by a doctor, by whoever — that cut your life back much further than anyone meant to.

Maybe your life now looks barren and dead.

What happened to that tree over the next two years is the reason I wrote this article, and spoiler alert-it has a happy ending!

Two years ago, Dr. Robin Pfaff and her husband nearly killed a tree in their backyard. 🌳

As a result of several unfortunate events, including her husband's heart attack the day before the movers arrived for a cross-country move, the tree dropped nearly all its leaves and stood there looking dead. 🪾

I think a lot of us know that feeling from the inside. 💔

Hello, fibromyalgia.

Decisions get made — by you, by a doctor, by whoever — that cut your life back much further than anyone meant to.

Maybe your life now looks barren and dead.

What happened to that tree over the next two years is the whole reason Dr. Robin wrote this article, and I'm not going to spoil it for you. 😉

I'll only say this: she doesn't pretend the damage disappeared.

In fact, you can still see it.

Dr. Robin also shares some journal prompts to help you reflect. 💜

Thanks to the Fibromyalgia Association for posting:

New fibromyalgia research offers important genetic clues about the biology of the condition. A large genetic study recently published in Nature Medicine provides new evidence reinforcing our understanding of fibromyalgia as a central nervous system disorder.

In this new Medscape article, fibromyalgia researcher and study co-author Daniel Clauw, MD, discusses what the findings tell us about the genetics of fibromyalgia, why they further support the role of the central nervous system, and what they could mean for the future of fibromyalgia research and treatment.

It's encouraging to see genetics adding another important piece to our understanding of the biology of fibromyalgia.

Study co-author Daniel Clauw, MD, explains how the largest study of its kind bolsters the growing evidence that fibromyalgia starts in the central nervous system.

New on The Fibro Compass℠:
Joy Is Not A Productivity Bonus
by Jeannette Rechsteiner
Certified Fibromyalgia Coach®

Have you ever promised yourself you'd enjoy the afternoon — right after the emails are answered?

Then the laundry.
Then one more thing.
Then it's dark out.

…and you’re crashed out on the couch with nothing left.

The list of things to do never ends. 🫣

In this week’s article, Jeannette makes a case I think a lot of us need to hear:

Joy isn't the prize you collect once you've been productive enough to deserve it.

In fact, for a fibromyalgia nervous system, JOY may be the thing that allows you to meet the day at all. 💜

The best thing about Jeannette’s article is the humanness she shows as she writes.

She even admits how badly she follows her own advice — writing most of this article indoors, on a beautiful day, refusing to stop until she finishes ‘just this one thing.’ The one thing being an article about not postponing joy. 😂

If you've been treating pleasure as something you have to earn first, this article is your permission slip.

It’s also a healthy dose of “you’re not alone.”

Important information!

Important information!

Two landmark studies published this week are shining a brighter light on the genetic architecture of fibromyalgia.

One study, published in Nature Communications, mapped the genetic architecture of fibromyalgia in more than 1.7 million people, helping researchers better understand the genes associated with the condition across diverse populations.

A second study, published in Nature Medicine—the largest genetic study of fibromyalgia to date—found that many of the identified genetic signals are concentrated in nervous system cells. The researchers concluded that their findings provide robust genetic evidence supporting a central nervous system basis for fibromyalgia and establish an important biological framework for understanding this complex condition.

Together, these studies reinforce that fibromyalgia is a biologically based condition. The Yale study found that although fibromyalgia shares some genetic overlap with conditions such as PTSD and depression, its genetic architecture aligns more closely with chronic pain, migraine, and other pain-related biological pathways than with psychiatric traits.

While genetics is only one piece of the puzzle—and having certain genes does not mean someone will develop fibromyalgia—research like this helps move us closer to better understanding fibromyalgia, improving diagnosis, reducing stigma, and ultimately developing more targeted treatments.

"Healing isn't about doing more—
it's about learning what your body truly needs."

— Dr. Robin Pfaff, Certified Fibromyalgia Coach®

I think many of us have been taught that if we're not getting better, we just need to try harder.

More determination.
More willpower.
More pushing through.

But fibromyalgia doesn't usually respond well to "more” —

and you can’t push yourself into healing.

In this week's article, Dr. Robin shares the story of her client, Dale, and what became possible once she stopped fighting her body and started working with it.

If you've been doing everything you know to do and you're still not getting the results you hoped for, this is a story worth reading.

First the Hardship, Then the Healing
by Dr. Robin Pfaff
Certified Fibromyalgia Coach®

One of the hardest parts of living with fibromyalgia isn't just the pain.

It's getting to the point where you don't trust your own body anymore.

When you have fibromyalgia, IBS, migraines, anxiety, depression, sleep issues, and other chronic conditions all happening at once, it can feel impossible to know what's causing what—or where to begin.

As Dr. Robin writes,
"It's a frustrating, devastating and scary spiral when you don't know how to help yourself."

In her newest article, Dr. Robin shares the story of her client, Dale, whose years of chronic illness left her feeling disconnected from her own body.

What I love about this piece is that Dr. Robin doesn't skip straight to the happy ending.

She walks you through the fear.

The grief.

The confusion.

The moments that made healing feel impossible.

And then, little by little, how trust began to return.

If you're wondering whether it's possible to trust your body again after everything you've been through, Dr. Robin's article is a great place to start.
