Exciting news!

All of our elementary schools have been selected to participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) for the new school year!

The Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program (FFVP) is a federal program that provides free, fresh fruit and vegetables along with bite-sized nutrition lessons to elementary students. Twice a week our cafeterias send out familiar, and unfamiliar, fruits and vegetables for students to experience.

This week we’re serving Plums and Picasso Melons. Families, we encourage you to ask your students what they thought about this week’s fruits!

What to see what we will serve next? Preview the Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program Menu by heading here: https://www.alhambraesd.org/page/fresh-fruit-vegetable-program.

✏️ State testing time is here, and we have 6 Dietitian-approved test tips for AESD students!

1) Eat breakfast on test day (and ideally every day). No need to stress about what you are going to eat for breakfast on test day because all AESD students eat free!

2) Focus on whole grains, protein, and fruit. If you’re going to eat at home, you don’t have to eat “breakfast food.” It could be a snack you enjoy. Try to include whole grains, protein (like milk, cheese, yogurt, or sausage), and fruit.

3) Eat lunch on test day (and you guessed it, ideally every day). Lunch is free for all AESD students, and all food groups are offered daily!

4) Eat afterschool supper. If you participate in an afterschool program (like tutoring), you may be able to get a free supper. Check with your school to be sure!

5) Stay hydrated. You can hydrate by drinking water, cow’s milk, milk alternatives (like soy milk), 100% juice, and by eating fruits and vegetables.

6) Get 8 to 12 hours of sleep the night before. Students ages 6 to 13 need 8 to 12 hours of quality sleep each night.

Good luck, and see you in the lunch line!

At , student voice and choice matters!

Middle Schoolers at AlhambraTraditional voted on two homemade recipes to help us decide which one to feature on next year’s menu: 1) Sopa de Fideo (Noodle Soup) or 2) Sopa de Albóndigas (Meatball Soup).

Team 1 and Team 2 from our Menu Development Team threw down and cooked up samples of each recipe. Then our team passed out samples and asked students to vote on which recipe would be crowned the “Recipe of the Year” by voting “yes” or “no” on both recipes.

The recipe that had 1,203 “yes” votes and a 94% student approval rating was... Sopa de Fideo (Noodle Soup)!

Huge shoutout to the Menu Development Team as a whole for working very hard to share homemade recipes that were from the heart.

And to all AESD students, be on the look out for HOMEMADE Sopa de Fideo on next year’s menu!

🤔 Who would want to choose between empanadas and taquitos?

Not too many people, but the GAP Cafe Crew was up for the challenge!

The AESD Child Nutrition department conducted a student taste test to decide what items should be added on next year’s lunch menu.

“With great power comes great responsibility.”

Thank you Cafe Crew for helping us decide what goes on the menu!
