World Mental Health Day 💚

Being heard matters.

This year’s World Mental Health Day theme, “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change,” reminds us that people with lived experience should have meaningful opportunities to help shape the support and services that affect them.

Good Shepherd Fund believes person-centered support begins by listening to individuals, respecting their choices, and valuing their experiences.

Planning Ahead for Ages 17 and 18 📅

SSA’s Emergency Message points to an important planning window for children who receive SSI.

The account’s growth period ends on December 31 of the calendar year in which the child turns age 17. SSA also says additional guidance will follow on how these accounts are treated after the growth period.

That transition period matters.

Families, trustees, payees, and advocates will need to watch for future guidance on several key questions:

What happens after the growth period ends?

Can funds be rolled into an ABLE account?

How will the account be treated after age 18?

Will distributions count as income or resources?

How should this account type be coordinated with SSI, ABLE accounts, and special needs trusts?

For now, this should not be viewed as a standalone solution. It may be a helpful childhood savings tool, but it will likely require careful planning before the child reaches adulthood.

At Secured Alliance, we believe strong planning starts early and adapts as rules, needs, and life circumstances change.

Communication should be accessible to everyone.

Today, we celebrate sign languages and recognize the Deaf communities that use and preserve them around the world.
