Want less of a 4 a.m. glucose spike? Lift weights. Build muscle. Improve aerobic fitness!! A metabolically fit body is better at telling the liver, “We’ve got this—no need to dump so much glucose”
Welcome to the Dawn Phenomenon.
As morning approaches, hormones like cortisol and growth hormone increase to prepare your body for the day. These hormones signal the liver to release stored glucose into the bloodstream.The liver is the body’s blood sugar regulator.
Unlike muscle, the liver contains the enzyme needed to release glucose into circulation.
Muscle glycogen can fuel the muscle itself; but it can’t share with the rest of the body.
Liver = checking account
Muscle = savings account
The liver helps fuel the brain, nervous system, and other tissues while you’re sleeping and preparing to wake.
In Type 2 Diabetes, insulin resistance may reduce the body’s ability to suppress this glucose release, leading to elevated fasting blood sugars despite normal levels before bed.
And, yes, It’s true! Something more animated happens to me when a microphone hits my hand, even if it’s tiny. 😂
