Sound sensitivity is incredibly common during this transition, and it comes down to declining estrogen and progesterone. These hormonal shifts affect the nervous system in ways that can lead to real, physical changes in how you process sound, including a pattern described as misophonia, an intense reaction to specific sounds like chewing or tapping. This isn’t in your head. 👀
Estrogen plays a big role in healthy nerve firing. When it starts to fluctuate, nerves can become hypersensitive, especially in the ears. That’s why normal sounds can suddenly feel loud, sharp, or even painful.
Progesterone plays a role too. Think of it as your brain’s built in noise canceling system. When progesterone drops, your brain loses some of its ability to filter and soften incoming sound, which makes you more prone to overstimulation.

→ Reduced tolerance to sound
