Johns Hopkins researchers recently documented that hives are common in POTS and other forms of orthostatic intolerance, and that the frequency of hives predicted higher Malmö POTS scores, and higher GI, bladder, and vasomotor subdomain scores on the COMPASS-31 survey. They note that the autonomic nervous system directly activates mast cells and that activated mast cells promote autonomic dysfunction, making it challenging to know the root cause in patients who have both mast cell activation and autonomic dysfunction. Further research is needed in this area to identify optimal treatments for patients.
