Preventing Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Youth

Living for Zachary is a non-profit organization [(501 (c) (3) 80-0410066] with a mission dedicated to saving young lives from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The organization was founded in honor of Zachary Schrah, who was only 16 years old when he collapsed during a high school football practice in Plano on April 2, 2009. After Zachary’s death, the Living for Zachary Organization was established to raise awareness of undiagnosed heart issues in teens.

I ❤️ my heart.

That’s why I take steps to protect it.

Many serious heart conditions in youth show no symptoms and can go undetected during routine physicals. A simple heart screening can help identify potential risks early before they become life-threatening.

Taking care of your heart starts with awareness.

We are grateful for their courage, dedication, and selflessness. As we spend time with family and loved ones today, we remember those who gave everything to protect the freedoms we cherish.

From all of us at Living for Zachary, thank you to our fallen heroes and the families who carry their legacy forward.

Because of an AED, he is here today.

In 2020, Living for Zachary donated four AEDs to Boy Scouts of America Circle Ten Council camps across North Texas. More than four years later, one of those AEDs became life-saving.

In March 2024, during a weekend at Camp Constantin in Graford, Texas (more than 30 minutes from the nearest hospital), one man experienced a cardiac emergency. Thanks to the quick actions of his three friends and the presence of an AED, his life was saved.

This is why we do what we do. Access to AEDs and prepared bystanders can make the difference when every second counts.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of death in young athletes, and it often occurs with no warning signs.

Immediate CPR and access to an AED can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival.

Awareness and preparation save lives.

Do you know where your nearest AED is?

Take a moment to think about it. At your school, gym, office, or local field? In a cardiac emergency, every second matters, and knowing where an AED is located
can make the difference between life and death.

Awareness is the first step. Be ready, be informed, and help create a heart-safe community.
