What's the Difference Between Essential Oils and Fragrances?

🌱 Essential oils are made from pressed plant matter (like lavender flowers). Essential oils contain no synthetic chemicals or phthalates and are 2x to 10x the price of fragrances. We scent our soaps using only certified organic essential oils.

🧪 Fragrances are lab-made chemical compounds designed to replicate the smells of nature. For example, lavender fragrance is NOT made from real lavender plants. Fragrances contain phthalates—endocrine-disrupting chemicals linked to cancer. [scroll to end for sources] We never use fragrances.

❓ If fragrances are so bad, why do so many companies use them?
Because fragrances are cheap. They're cheap because they're made in a lab from inexpensive chemicals. In contrast, essentials oils are made from pressed plant matter. You have to press a lot of plants to get a little bit of oil, which is why essential oils are 2x to 10x the price of fragrances. We only use the highest quality organic essential oils.

What are Phthalates? Phthalates (pronounced "THa-lates") are widely-used chemicals found in cosmetics, fragrances, body wash, soaps, and other personal care products. Phthalates have been linked to cancer, endocrine-system disruption and other health problems.

What about 'natural' fragrances?
There is no such thing as "natural fragrance." All fragrances are synthetic, lab-made chemicals containing phthalates. "Natural fragrance" is a term created by the cosmetics industry to greenwash their products and deceive consumers into believing their products are safe and natural. Only essential oils are safe, natural and phthalate-free.

Our soaps are made with essential oils—not fragrances—and contain no phthalates.

But here’s a fun fact: if a bar claims to be “pH neutral” or “pH balanced,” it’s not actually soap — it’s a detergent!
