Sedentary lifestyle can be a serious risk factor to injury. Remember this before jumping back into an active lifestyle, these simple steps: 1) make a plan. ( helps us feel accountable and makes it easier to execute) 2) it’s okay to start off small and build it up slowly ( it allows our body to adapt to the new change). 3) Don’t be afraid of DOMS ( Delay Onset Muscle Soreness is okay and is normal to get from new recent activity). 4) most importantly HAVE FUN ( finding something meaningful and fun for you is the activity you need to do, don’t force yourself to do something that doesn’t bring you joy) If you need help; come to Hawthorne Family Medicine and see the wonderful providers on how we can help you become more active after being sedentary, injured, post-op, afraid, etc.

Recommendation of Physical Activity (Adults/older adults and children)

Adult and older adults: 150 min per week of moderate aerobic physical activity (heavier breathing but able to continue a conversation) or 75 min per week of vigorous aerobic activity (heavy breathing and a bit difficult to continue a conversation); or a combination of both
-More benefits if done at least 300min per week of moderate or 150 min per week of vigorous
-Prefer to spread out workouts throughout the week instead of all at once (ex: 30 min for 5 days a week of moderate-intensity = 150 min total that week)

Additional: Add moderate to high intensity of muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days per week (bigger muscle groups, ex: lower body and upper body)

Older adults should also include balance training 3 times a week

Children should aim for at least 60min of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity with 3 days of vigorous activity.
-3 days per week of muscle/bone-strengthening activities

Remember to gradually increase intensity over time because you are always getting stronger and everyone starts from somewhere, don’t compare yourself to others.

SPEND LESS TIME SITTING. EVEN LIGHT-INTENSITY ACTIVITY CAN OFFSET SOME OF THE RISKS OF BEING SEDENTARY.

-Most importantly just have fun and move your body.

About 1 in 2 adults live with a chronic disease; such as heart conditions, pulmonary condition, diabetes, etc. (Half of those have 2 or more chronic diseases)

Statistically, only ½ of adults will get the regular physical activity that they will need to help reduce and prevent those chronic diseases.

Regular physical activities help with the aspects of health-related quality of life, including physical, mental, and/or emotional health.

Here is a list of benefits of keeping a regular physical activity regimen (aerobic, strengthing (muscle and bone), balance, and flexibility)
