Ohhhh . Let us be clear: YES, you can VBAC without a doula. However, it is important to know that doulas provide unique support when compared to your partner, your midwife, or even your nurse. So when doula care is available to you, we cannot recommend taking advantage of it enough! Here's what we mean...

Your partner may be an Olympic-level hip squeezer, but can he analyze your labor pattern and even the sounds you're making in labor to actually help your labor progress? Because doula care is more than comfort measures.

Your midwife is an incredible option for a provider, but her main job is your medical care. She's looking at your bleeding, managing any concerns with you and the baby, etc. Your doula? She helps you translate medical jargon, empowers you to make informed decisions about your care, and also helps set the tone for a calm environment in labor.

Your nurse may be trained in spinning babies, and she may totally have the capacity to help with position changes... she also may not. You might not be her only patient. And betting on your nurse stepping in to be your doula is making a BET, not relying on a promise. Your doula's only priority is supporting YOU.

5 THINGS TO ASK BEFORE AGREEING TO AN INDUCTION

Being offered an induction doesn’t mean you have to immediately say yes or no.

It means it’s time to ask questions.

Before making your decision, ask:

1. Why are you recommending an induction?
Is there a medical concern right now, or is this recommendation based on gestational age, hospital/provider preference, or something else?

2. What are the benefits of inducing now?
Ask what specific risk the induction is intended to reduce for you or your baby.

3. What are the risks and trade-offs?
Ask about the proposed medications or procedures, how they may affect labor, and what additional interventions may become more likely.

4. What are my alternatives?
Are there other reasonable options, such as waiting, additional monitoring, or reassessing at a specific time?

5. What happens if I wait?
Not “What could possibly go wrong?” Ask what the evidence says about the risks and benefits of waiting another day, several days, or whatever timeframe applies to your situation.

You can remember it with BRAIN:

B — Benefits
R — Risks
A — Alternatives
I — Intuition / what matters to me
N — Nothing for now / what happens if we wait?

Sometimes induction is absolutely the right choice.

But informed consent isn't simply being told what your provider recommends. It's understanding why, knowing your options, and having the opportunity to make a decision you feel comfortable with.

Save this one for later or send it to the pregnant woman in your life who needs to know she can ask questions.

Across rural Colorado, hospitals are making choices that once seemed unimaginable — closing labor and delivery units, scaling back core services and questioning whether they can continue offering care their communities have depended on for generations. https://buff.ly/potB05S

Apparently growing a fourth human while trying to keep up with life can make it a little too easy to get behind on taking care of yourself. 😂

I was so dehydrated and this IV was very much needed. Huge thank you to Jessica Jessica | RN, BSN 🦋 and her team at Modwella®️| Mobile IV Therapy + Aesthetics + Wellness for coming right to my house and taking such good care of me.

Jessica and the nurse who came with her were both wonderful. They made me feel completely comfortable, and the whole experience was so easy and relaxed.

As both a doula and a very pregnant mama, I especially loved the convenience of having them come to me. No loading up kids, no sitting in a waiting room, no adding another outing to the day—just getting to stay home, put my feet up, and get some much-needed hydration.

And Pueblo friends—Jessica and the Modwella team are growing their services here locally! If having mobile IV hydration come right to your home sounds as convenient to you as it did to me, definitely give them a follow. 🤍

At this stage of pregnancy, anything that makes taking care of myself a little easier is a win.
