There is a profound sense of peace that settles over the homestead when you stop working for a moment, open your eyes, and truly look at the abundance God has provided. 🌿✨

Today was one of those days where I felt so incredibly blessed just to walk the land. From the wild dewberries ripening in the backyard to watching our "Jewels" grazing peacefully in the pasture, the beauty is everywhere if we take the time to notice it.

I even found these stunning wild Irises tucked away in the back pasture! They were too beautiful to leave out there, so I’ve been busy transplanting them to the front yard to bring a little of that wild grace closer to the house.

For my fellow homesteaders, if you find wild Irises on your land and want to move them, here is the "Hearth and Hyssop" guide to successful transplanting:

💜 The Root of the Matter: Irises grow from thick, tuber-like roots called rhizomes. When you dig them up, try to keep the rhizome intact with its stringy roots attached.
💜 The "Duck" Rule: This is the most important part! Do not bury the rhizome deep. It should sit right at the surface of the soil, like a duck floating on water. The sun needs to hit the top of that root to keep it healthy and prevent rot.
💜 The Trim: Once they are in their new spot, trim the long leaves down to about 4–6 inches in an upside-down "V" shape. This helps the plant focus its energy on growing new roots instead of trying to keep those long leaves hydrated.
💜 Drainage is Key: Irises hate "wet feet," so make sure they are in a spot where the water doesn't pool.

Taking these wild treasures and giving them a new home is such a rewarding way to build a landscape that is both beautiful and resilient. I am so thankful for these simple, perfect gifts from the Earth. 🤍🌸

What "wild" treasures have you found on your property lately? I’d love to see what’s blooming in your neck of the woods!

I think my incubator is playing tricks on me! 🐣🤔

I started this spring project expecting a beautiful clutch of Harlequin ducks, settled in for a long 28-day wait. But Nature had a "fast-track" plan instead! On Day 21, this little yellow fluffball decided to make a grand entrance.

I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure Harlequin ducks aren't supposed to have pointy beaks! We definitely have a mystery chicken imposter among us.

To make it even funnier, check out the photo of the other little chick. It was so exhausted from the drama of hatching early that it literally fell asleep face-first right in the food dish! 😴🥣 I guess when you’re this cute and this much of a surprise, you just run out of steam.

Over here at Hearth and Hyssop, we talk a lot about sustainability and working with what God gives us. Sometimes, that means pivoting when your "duck" starts chirping instead of quacking. Whether it’s saving seeds from bolting lettuce or raising a surprise barnyard mix, homesteading is all about embracing the unexpected and finding the joy in the mystery.

Welcome to the homestead, little ones—even if you aren't exactly what I "ordered!"

From Salad to Seed: The Beauty of a Bolting Garden 🌿
If you’re out in the garden this week and notice your lettuce is reaching for the sky and getting a bit bitter, don't pull it out just yet! While most people see "bolting" as the end of the harvest, for a sustainable homesteader, it’s actually the beginning.

In the photos from my garden today:

You can see the lettuce stalks "stretching" upwards (bolting).

The close-ups show those tight little green buds—those are about to burst into flowers!

I’ve got several varieties going at once, ensuring a diverse seed bank for next year.

By letting our lettuce go to seed, we are closing the loop. These seeds will "remember" our Northeast Texas soil and climate, making next year’s crop even more resilient and independent. Plus, the tiny yellow flowers are a feast for the pollinators!

How to Harvest for Next Season:
Wait for the "Puffs": Watch for the flowers to turn into white, fluffy heads (they look like miniature dandelions). That’s your sign the seeds are mature.

The Brown Bag Method: Once about half the heads are fluffy, place a brown paper bag over the stalk and give it a good shake. The heavy, dark seeds will fall to the bottom.

The Hang Dry: You can also cut the whole stalk and hang it upside down inside the bag in a dry spot for a week or two to let the rest of the seeds drop naturally.

Cleaning: Gently blow away the white fluff (chaff) and keep the solid seeds.

Pro-Tips for Storage:
The Snap Test: Spread your seeds on a plate for 2–3 days to ensure they are bone-dry. If a seed snaps under your fingernail, it’s ready. If it smushes, it needs more time!

Stay Cool: Store them in a glass jar or envelope in a cool, dark place inside the house.

Label Everything: Mark the variety and the date.

Saving our own seeds is about more than just saving a few dollars—it’s about food sovereignty and making sure our land provides for us year after year.

Are any of you letting your greens go to seed this spring? I’d love to hear what varieties are doing best on your land!

A Note to Our Community

Thank you! To every one of you who has supported us by purchasing our products—your support has been the heartbeat of this journey. We are so grateful for where we’ve been, and we are even more excited about where we are heading.

We are officially shifting our focus. As we move forward, we are slowing down our production to prioritize a more sustainable way of living. We believe that true growth happens in community, so we are transitioning into a space where we can share, trade, and learn together.
Our goal is to build a vibrant, free-to-access community where we can:

Trade plants and cuttings with one another.

Share knowledge and teach each other the skills we’ve learned.

Support each other in living more sustainably, one plant at a time.

We want to move away from the traditional model and toward a culture of abundance through sharing. Whether you are a master gardener or just starting your first cutting, there is a place for you here.

Thank you for being part of this new chapter. Let’s grow something beautiful together.

We love a good tech hack on the homestead, but some things are best left to the old-fashioned way. 🌲✨
AI is great for planning garden layouts, but if you’re out foraging, please don't trust a chatbot to tell you what's for dinner. AI might be able to hallucinate an answer, but you can’t hallucinate your way out of a bad mushroom! Always verify your finds with a local expert or a reliable botanical guide. Stay safe out there!

Hi neighbors! I’m planning to build a small stand for a community plant exchange here in Quitman to help us all share our love of gardening. Does anyone have any leftover lumber, screws, or outdoor-friendly materials sitting in their garage or shed that they aren't using? I’d be happy to take them off your hands and give them a new life for the community! Thanks in advance for helping grow our local plant network.

SOLD OUT!

The Hearth’s Hand-Crafted Lip Balms — $5 to $14 🌿👄

Pure Protection | Generational Wisdom | Handcrafted Heritage

Tending the homestead in the Texas wind and sun can take a toll on even the strongest. For too long, we’ve reached for store-bought balms filled with petroleum and synthetic wax. Here at the Hearth, we’ve returned to the "old ways," crafting a protective shield for your lips using only the pure, nourishing ingredients God provided.

As it says in Psalm 104:14 (NIV): "He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate—bringing forth food from the earth."

We believe in honoring that provision by using only the finest versions of nature’s bounty. Our lip balms are handcrafted with raw, unrefined butters and top-of-the-line, therapeutic-grade essential oils to provide deep nourishment and a natural, protective barrier.

The Hearth Details:

5g Artisan Bamboo Tube

Single Balm: $5

The Hearth Bundle (Choose any 3): $14

Each balm is housed in a sustainable, artisan bamboo tube—bringing a touch of the earth into your daily routine and ensuring your balm stays protected in your apron pocket or garden bag.

Choose Your Blend:

The Sunday Rest (Vanilla & Sandalwood): $5 — A warm, grounding aroma that feels like a quiet afternoon in the homestead kitchen.

The Minty Meadow (Spearmint & Lavender): $5 — Sweet and cooling. Traditionally used to soothe wind-chapped lips with the gentlest touch.

The Texas Citrus (Orange, Grapefruit & Lemon): $5 — A bright, sun-drenched burst of citrus to keep you refreshed while tending the garden.

The Nurse’s Rescue (Chamomile, Rose & Frankincense): $6 — Our premium blend. The "gold standard" for skin restoration, crafted for those needing extra "tender mercies" for dry lips.

What’s Inside:

Raw Texas Beeswax (Natural Protective Shield)

Unrefined Shea Butter & Cocoa Butter (Deeply Nourishing Base)

Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil (For a Smooth, Natural Glide)
Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils (Top-of-the-Line Aromatic Vitality)

THE VITAL STATS: Every single batch is made to order to ensure the highest integrity and freshness. We never use petroleum, parabens, or "fragrance" oils—only the life blood of the plants.
