To all of my future patients….
What Is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?
At Smiles By Candy, I use Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)—a modern, evidence-based approach to dental hygiene that is designed to be more comfortable, more thorough, and gentler than many traditional dental cleanings.
What is biofilm?
Biofilm is the soft, sticky layer of bacteria that naturally forms on your teeth every day. If it isn’t removed, it can contribute to:
* Bleeding gums
* Bad breath
* Cavities
* Gum disease
* Inflammation throughout the mouth
With GBT, we first apply a harmless disclosing solution that colors the biofilm so we can actually see where the bacteria are hiding. Instead of guessing where to clean, we remove only what needs to be removed.
How is GBT different from a traditional cleaning?
Traditional Cleaning
* Often begins with hand scaling or scraping.
* Plaque and tartar are removed by feel.
* May involve more scraping and polishing.
* Can be uncomfortable for patients with sensitive teeth or inflamed gums.
Guided Biofilm Therapy
* Biofilm is disclosed so you can see exactly where bacteria are located.
* Warm water, gentle air, and a fine erythritol powder are used to comfortably remove biofilm and stains.
* Hand instruments are used only when necessary.
* Your teeth, gums, implants, crowns, veneers, and orthodontic appliances are treated with exceptional care.
Benefits of GBT
✔️ More comfortable for sensitive teeth
✔️ Less scraping and vibration
✔️ Removes biofilm more thoroughly
✔️ Excellent for preventing cavities and gum disease
✔️ Helps reduce bleeding and inflammation
✔️ Safely cleans around crowns, bridges, veneers, implants, and braces
✔️ Removes many coffee, tea, wine, and to***co stains
✔️ Leaves teeth feeling exceptionally smooth and clean
✔️ Allows you to see the bacteria yourself, making home care easier to understand
Why I chose GBT
I believe dental hygiene should be about preventing disease—not just cleaning teeth.
GBT allows me to provide a more personalized cleaning by identifying exactly where harmful bacteria are located and removing them with precision while preserving healthy tooth structure and soft tissues.
Many of my patients tell me:
“That was the most comfortable and thorough cleaning I’ve ever had.”
My goal is for every patient to leave not only with cleaner teeth, but with a better understanding of their oral health and a plan to keep their smile healthy between visits.
I’m excited to meet you,
Candy
