Taught by Aracely Rodriguez, doula and birth educator, with twenty years of catching babies in homes, birthing centers, and hospitals across the Inland Empire.

A teenager. Just a baby herself. First pregnancy. Scared in the way only a girl who’s about to become a mama overnight can be scared. She’s one of the mamas in our doula program, and yesterday I found out her induction was today - and she had nothing waiting for her at home. No bassinet. No car seat. No diapers. No soft little outfit to bring her baby home in.

So I posted. I asked. I hoped.

In less than 24 hours, our community showed up so hard I don’t even have the words. This video is my team and I today - folding, packing, preparing every single thing she needs so that when she walks out of that hospital with her baby in her arms, she walks into a life that’s ready for her.

As a clinical director and a doula myself, I’ve watched a lot of mamas go into inductions. I have never watched one walk in this loved by people who have never met her ❤️

She needs so much love. So much grace. And today, because of you, she has both - in piles and bags and bassinets and folded blankets and a hundred quiet acts of kindness from strangers who decided she mattered.
She’s being induced as I post this. Her baby is coming into a world that already chose them both.

To everyone who gave, shared, dropped off, or said a prayer - thank you. You didn’t just give a teen mama things. You gave her the message that she is held.

This might surprise you… It’s not just about feeling tired.

Low iron can affect:
- 😞 mood (anxiety + depression)
- 🍼 milk supply
- 🧠 focus + memory (holy brain fog!!!)
- ❤️ your whole body (literally every single organ)

⚠️ And most moms are not taking enough iron to actually fix it!

Your iron dose should be based on:
- ferritin (iron storage)
- transferrin
- hemoglobin

👉 Hemoglobin alone is not enough (It’s the LAST thing to drop) and ferritin without transferrin is not reliable postpartum!

Optimal levels for postpartum: FERRITIN >50, HEMOGLOBIN 13.5-14.5

🍊 To absorb more iron:
✔ take with vitamin C
❌ avoid calcium (dairy) at the same time

And here’s the part most people don’t know:

Your body has an “iron gate” that closes after you take iron. So if you take it too soon again, you absorb less.

👉 That’s why I often let my patients know to discuss with their physician:
- every other day dosing
- sometimes she iron deficiency is pretty bad - even every 36 hours (hard to follow, I know 😅)

🧡 Better timing = better absorption + fewer side effects

🤰Cesarean rates vary too

This doesn’t mean one hospital is “good” or “bad.” Birth is complex and many factors matter. But it does remind us that where we give birth can shape our experience.

Sometimes we don’t get to choose our hospital. Insurance, providers, and medical needs can decide that for us.

But if we can plan ahead, it’s worth taking a little time to learn about the hospitals in our area and think about what matters most to us.

One thing that helps families feel more supported in any hospital is having a doula.
