We recently asked our network which type of risk concerns leaders most. Insider threats emerged as the leading concern, receiving more than twice the votes of any other category, and it's an important conversation to have.

Insider threats aren't always malicious. They can stem from disgruntled employees, compromised credentials, unintentional actions, or individuals exploiting trusted access. What makes these risks particularly challenging is that traditional security measures may not be enough to identify them.

Effective risk management requires a more comprehensive approach: understanding behaviors, recognizing potential indicators, connecting information across teams, and establishing processes for early intervention.

The goal isn't to create a culture of suspicion. It's to build a culture of awareness, preparedness, and informed decision-making.

We're curious: does this result reflect the conversations happening within your organization? Or is another risk moving higher on your priority list?

Publicly available doesn’t automatically mean actionable.

Organizations have access to an enormous amount of information, from social media and news coverage to public records, corporate filings, imagery and online communities. The challenge is knowing what matters, what can be verified, and how it connects to the risks you’re trying to understand.

That’s where open-source intelligence (OSINT) comes in.

OSINT turns legally accessible, publicly available information into intelligence that can help organizations identify emerging threats, verify facts, and better understand potential exposure. OSINT Infographic

Our latest infographic breaks down the fundamentals of OSINT, including where information comes from, how it is analyzed, and how organizations can put those insights to work.

Strong governance requires leaders to continually look ahead, understanding not only the risks organizations face today, but how those risks may evolve tomorrow.

AT-RISK International President & CEO Chuck Tobin will be attending the NACD Directors Summit October 11–14 in Washington, DC.

Bringing together board directors, senior executives, and governance leaders from across industries, the Summit will explore many of the issues shaping conversations today, from risk oversight and corporate strategy to cybersecurity, technology, and AI.

Chuck looks forward to connecting with fellow leaders, exchanging perspectives, and joining important conversations around building more informed, resilient organizations.

Event security doesn’t begin and end at the venue doors. Attendees, executives, employees, and other key stakeholders may be moving through airports, hotels, transportation routes, off-site meetings, and surrounding areas throughout an event. That means effective security planning requires looking at the bigger picture.

AT-RISK helps organizations consider the full event environment, from protective intelligence and secure transportation to close protection and coordinated security support.

Because protecting an event isn’t only about what happens inside the venue. It’s about understanding the entire journey surrounding it.

Strong protective operations depend on strong teams, and strong teams depend on leadership built on trust.

Read below for AT-RISK Director of Operations Nicole Malarney's important perspective on the transition from agent to Detail Leader:

Moving from agent to Detail Leader requires a shift in how you think about your role. As an agent, you're focused on executing your responsibilities at the highest level. As a Detail Leader, you're still accountable for the mission, but you're also responsible for creating an environment where the entire team can perform at its best.

That means building trust, listening to the people around you, recognizing individual strengths, and knowing when to step forward and make the call or when to step back and let someone else lead.
The best Detail Leaders I've worked with don't need to be the loudest person in the room. They lead with composure, humility, and confidence in their team.

Executive protection is ultimately a team effort. When people trust one another, communicate openly, and know their contributions are valued, they operate more cohesively. And a stronger team means stronger protection for the principal.

Leadership in executive protection isn't earned by tenure alone. It's built in the relationships you develop, the people you empower, and the trust you earn along the way.

An insider threat may not end when an employee leaves the organization. When a major U.S. retail grocery chain became concerned that a former employee may have compromised its network prior to termination, AT-RISK International’s Global Risk Intelligence (GRI) team was engaged to assess the potential ongoing risk.

Through in-depth open-source intelligence (OSINT) research and dark web monitoring, the investigation identified behavioral concerns related to both cybersecurity and physical security, including threats against employees.

But the investigation also uncovered something the organization wasn’t initially looking for: previously unknown sensitive information and personally identifiable information (PII) involving current and former employees. That discovery exposed a broader cybersecurity vulnerability and helped inform the organization’s next step: pursuing Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) consultation.

It’s an important reminder that insider threat investigations aren’t simply about understanding what happened. They can help organizations identify vulnerabilities, connect risks across the physical and digital environment, and make more informed decisions about what comes next.

The AT-RISK International team was proud to join security professionals from around the world in Atlanta for three days of learning, collaboration, and meaningful conversations about the evolving security landscape at GSX 2026.

A special thank you to our very own Stephanie Bramel and Chuck Tobin for sharing their expertise during sessions focused on intelligence-led decision-making and executive protection. We’re proud to have our team contributing to these important industry conversations.

We also enjoyed the opportunity to connect with our colleagues from Protos Security and Securitime. Bringing our teams together to exchange ideas, strengthen relationships, and share perspectives made the week even more valuable.

Thank you to ASIS International and everyone who helped make GSX 2026 such a great experience.

The intelligence landscape continues to evolve, and so do the tools, skills, and perspectives required to navigate it.

AT-RISK International’s Roman Fisher will be attending the 9th Annual AIRIP Global Intelligence Forum next week in Indianapolis. This year’s theme, “Human-AI Collaboration in Intelligence,” will bring intelligence professionals together to explore the evolving relationship between human expertise and AI, including how organizations can effectively integrate AI while maintaining sound judgment, accountability, and trust.

We look forward to the conversations, insights, and connections that come from bringing professionals across the intelligence community together.

Comment below if you’ll be attending, and be sure to connect with Roman while you’re there.

Where critical infrastructure is concentrated, security risks become concentrated too.

Data centers aren't evenly distributed around the world. They cluster around regions with the infrastructure, connectivity, workforce, and energy resources needed to support large-scale computing. That concentration matters.

As these hubs continue to grow, they become increasingly important to:
• National security
• Economic resilience
• Communications
• Financial systems
• Artificial intelligence
• Cloud infrastructure

Understanding where critical infrastructure exists is only the first step. Understanding how emerging threats intersect with those locations is what enables organizations to better anticipate risk.

That's where intelligence makes the difference.
