New Mexico has been "bleeding" doctors at an alarming rate — and that means longer wait times, fewer specialists, and less access to care. Passing HB 99 is a critical step toward stabilizing our medical malpractice system, reducing pressure on providers, and making our state a place where doctors can stay and thrive.

This is a major victory for New Mexicans — your voices truly made a difference. Despite the challenges along the way, House Bill 99 crossed the finish line and delivers meaningful reforms to our state’s medical malpractice system.🏆

HB 99 updates how certain malpractice payments are structured, places new limits on punitive damages, and aims to bring more predictability and stability to the legal environment for healthcare providers. These changes are designed to help curb rising liability costs, strengthen the state’s Medical Malpractice Act framework, and make New Mexico a more competitive place for doctors to practice.🩺

Thank you to Representative Chandler and Leader Armstrong for leading the charge and advocating for reforms that support both patients and providers. Recruiting and retaining high-quality physicians is critical to improving access to care across our state — especially in rural and underserved communities.

There’s still work ahead, but this is real progress. Never underestimate the power of your voice — or your vote. 🗣️
