Another trip around the sun, and this past year has given me so much to celebrate.

As a wife, mom, pharmacist, and business owner, I’m incredibly proud of the momentum I’ve continued to build with Melissa Smith | FL Precision Medicine Pharmacist and the opportunity to help more people take a personalized approach to their health.

This year has been about growth, trusting the process, saying yes to new opportunities, and continuing to build something I truly believe in.

I’m walking into 42 grateful for how far I’ve come, excited about where Florida PGX Consulting is headed, and ready to keep the momentum going.

Some stories leave all of us asking whether there were opportunities to better support patients and families.

The recent discussions surrounding the Massachusetts postpartum case have renewed conversations about postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, medication safety, and access to personalized care.

Pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing is not a diagnostic test for postpartum depression or postpartum psychosis, nor can it predict or prevent these conditions. It also cannot tell us whether a different outcome would have occurred in any individual case.

What it can do is provide additional information about how a person’s genetics may influence their response to certain medications. For some patients, this information may help clinicians select medications with a lower likelihood of adverse effects or treatment failure, reducing some of the uncertainty associated with trial-and-error prescribing.

Women experiencing postpartum mental health conditions deserve comprehensive, evidence-based care. As precision medicine continues to evolve, we should continue exploring every clinically appropriate tool that can help personalize treatment and improve outcomes.
