September is so I wanted to take a moment to tell you a little bit about it. PCOS is a hormonal condition where the body produces too many androgens, or "male hormones". This causes problems like irregular and super painful periods, insulin resistance, and ovarian cysts for many (but not all) of people with PCOS and a lot of other symptoms.⠀

My wife has and it's we've had so many discussions about how difficult it is not only on a physical level - but an emotional/mental one as well, which has been the hardest for her. ⠀

PCOS often comes along with hirsutism, or excessive hair growth. Some people with PCOS can grow facial hair, even full beards (she can, and it's a mighty fine looking one! One of the positives of wearing a mask out in public is less shaving!) But when she was younger she'd shave her face twice a day just so that no one would see.⠀

So many of the symptoms have a HUGE impact on your self-esteem and your body image and they aren't often talked about. Infertility is probably the most talked about symptom but there are so many others. Hair growth on arms backs, chest, and stomach. Skin tags, acne, and dark patches of skin are also signs of PCOS, as well as weight gain and difficulty losing weight. Hormonal imbalances often cause mood swings, depression, anxiety, headaches, and insomnia as well.⠀

If you're experiencing a significant number of these symptoms talk to your doctor.⠀

Portland, Oregon

𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡⁣

As an IBCLC, I am obviously dedicated to breastfeeding.⁣

That support comes in the form of:⁣
🤱Evidence-based education⁣
🤱Evidence-based informed consent⁣
🤱Support of a mom reaching *her* goals, not mine⁣
👏...And support always, no matter what⁣

Let's not let how we feed our babies polarize us.⁣

We've got enough of that already in this world.⁣

Instead let's use this month to assist those who choose to breastfeed be successful and help moms reach their goals.⁣

❌Let's not use this month to throw fuel on the formula vs breastfeeding debate. There's just no need for that. ⁣

Let's help groups of women who have the cards stacked against them from the start.⁣

Let's hold medical professionals accountable for giving reliable lactation advice.⁣

Let's work together.⁣

Stay tuned as I share more this month!⁣

WHAT IS GBS?
GBS stands for Group B Strep. It's a bacteria that can be found in a woman's vaginal and GI microbiome. It causes her no harm, but can be an issue during pregnancy and delivery. This bacteria can infect babies and lead to pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, organ failure, and even death.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
HOW IT SPREADS DURING BIRTH
For women who are GBS positive (and we currently screen all women in the 3rd trimester via a swab), 50% will pass it to their newborns during labor and birth. Of those babies, 1-2% will develop invasive disease.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
HOW WE PREVENT THE SPREAD
It's pretty easy! Intravenous antibiotics in labor have been shown to drastically decrease the risk of transmitting GBS to newborns.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
HOW MUCH DOES THAT HELP?
Here's a simple way to break it down.
👉1 in 200: the number of babies who will become infected with GBS if their moms receive no antibiotics in labor.
👉1 in 4,000: the number of babies who will get infected when she DOES get the right antibiotics.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
SHOULD I HAVE A C-SECTION IF I AM GBS POSITIVE?
No! There's no data that helps and is a huge intervention to present GBS spread when we know antibiotics do a good job of treating it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
WILL I ALWAYS BE GBS POSITIVE?
Nope! It can come and go. If you've been GBS positive in one pregnancy, though, your risk of being positive again is about 50% - higher than the general population, but not 100%.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❓If you were GBS positive was it something that stressed you out?

July is Group B Strep (GBS) Awareness Month! DYK that according to the CDC, the two best ways to prevent GBS are testing pregnant women for GBS and to give antibiotics to women with an increased risk during labor?
