Thursday’s bad workout might have started Tuesday.
You felt good on Tuesday, so the easy run got a little faster.
Wednesday’s workout went fine.
Then Thursday arrives and your legs are garbage.
Naturally, you blame Thursday.
But training doesn’t work one workout at a time.
Easy enough to complete isn’t always easy enough to recover from.
That doesn’t mean you should always start every workout fresh. Sometimes carrying fatigue is exactly the point.

The better question is:

Was that fatigue part of the plan?

These are the patterns I look at with my athletes—not just whether Tuesday’s workout looked good, but what it allowed them to do Thursday.

Bad workout?
Look back 48 hours.

Congratulations, Daman Randhawa! 👊

For his first half Ironamn, Daman didn’t exactly ease into the sport—he took on the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Northern California in Redding and nailed it.

We only had a short time to work together before race day, but he learned quickly, trusted the plan and made smart adjustments when they mattered.

Most importantly, he crossed that finish line knowing this wasn’t the end of the journey. It was the beginning.

Daman has massive potential, and now we get to build on what he started.

First 70.3 complete. Now we train for the next one.

Help me congratulate Daman on becoming an IRONMAN 70.3 finisher! 👏

How sexy was your bike split if you’re forced to walk the final seven miles?

IRONMAN 70.3 Northern California may feel comfortable when the race begins Sunday.

That’s the trap.

You may have trained to hold a specific power on the bike or pace on the run.

But when you’re holding that number and your RPE—your rate of perceived effort—starts to soar, pay attention.

Your technology tells you what you’re producing.

RPE tells you what it’s costing you.

When the same pace or power suddenly requires much more effort, stubbornly holding the number isn’t disciplined racing.

It’s borrowing from later in the race.

Power. Heart rate. Pace. RPE.

They’re all information.

Race to your limit.

But race for the conditions.

If you’re racing in Redding this weekend—or racing anywhere in the heat—good luck.

Race smart.

Apparently Amy Piercy wasn't done. 🏆

A couple months after taking 1st in her age group at TBF Tri for Real, Multisport Endurance Academy athlete Amy Piercy came back and did it again.

And this one may be even more impressive.

Hotter conditions. More accumulated fatigue. Another Olympic-distance race.

And another trip to the top of the podium. 🥇

What I'm most excited about isn't just the result—it's watching the athlete she's becoming.

She's swimming faster than ever, riding like an absolute powerhouse, and continuing to build the run patiently and intelligently as we work toward the big goal: IRONMAN California.

The comeback story was cool.

Watching what she's doing now is even cooler.

Congratulations, Amy. Mad props on the continuing awesomeness.

Now quit screwing around and get back to training. 😁

One of the best parts of coaching isn't the podium. It's getting texts like this.

After crossing the finish line at IRONMAN 70.3 Boise, Scott sent me:

"Congratulations to Coach!"

Scott earned 5th place in the 65–69 age group, but this result wasn't built on race day. It was built over months of consistent training, trusting the process, and showing up when it mattered.

Congratulations, Scott. You earned every bit of it.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

One of my athletes drove nearly 12 hours to race a Half Ironman.

The day before the race, he played a quick nine holes of golf.

Nothing strenuous.

Then he bent down to pick up his golf ball.

POP.

By race morning, it hurt to breathe.

Here's the surprising part...

The injury didn't happen swinging the club.

It didn't happen during the race.

It happened picking up a golf ball.

After coaching endurance athletes for more than 16 years, I've learned something...

Some of the biggest injuries happen during the simplest movements.

Why?

Because the movement usually isn't the problem.

It's the body performing it.

Comment "POP" and I'll send you the 4-minute article that explains why this happens—and what you can do to stack the odds in your favor.

Most runners are trying to solve the wrong problem.
They buy new shoes.
Stretch more.
Foam roll.
Even run less.
But they never fix the movement that's creating the problem in the first place.
Curious?
Comment "DURABLE" and I'll send you the details.
