We get ONE visit after we have a baby. One. And then it’s “see you in a year.”

Meanwhile six months later a lot of us are still dealing with symptoms and being told we’re just getting used to our new bodies. We’re exhausted. We’re bloated. We can’t lose the weight and our brains feel like fog. Nobody has run our labs, so we have no idea what happened to our cholesterol or our blood sugar. We crash in the afternoon and rely on caffeine to get through the day, and then we don’t sleep well, so we do it all over again tomorrow.

And when we finally say something, we hear “give it time” or “this is your new norm.” Basically, toughen up, Mom.

Well, I don’t believe that. I believe that we can honor and appreciate everything our body has done for us in the process of becoming a mother, but also want and deserve to feel like ourselves in our own bodies. The two can coexist.

I believe you. I believe your symptoms in your experience. And I believe that you can feel truly well again.

So I’m here to break that system that has failed so many of us and build one that lets you feel like yourself again.

Momma’s deserve to feel good too 🤍

You take care of everyone else. When do you take care of you?

You don’t have to earn your workout, your outside walk alone or your coffee in peace.

And you definitely don’t need to earn the right to feel good in your body. What are you doing today that’s for you and you only?

As some point this narrative became engrained in us that once you become a mom you’re just doomed to be forever tired, worn out, self sacrificial, never back to our routines of exercise and self care.

Maybe it’s just my generation but I see it over and over again and experienced it myself. That women who become mothers lose a part of their identity in the process. The part that is tied to fitness, strength, feeling good, working on yourself and that we give that up to focus on our children because often those things take us away from our kids. Maybe because of guilt or responsibility to others, we let that part of ourselves go. And then with time realize that part of us, that loved to workout, to take time for ourselves, cook the healthy time consuming meal, go for the meandering walk, we miss that part of ourselves and recognize it’s a part of our identity that’s missing. But now, for some of us, we’re so far off track from where we once were, we don’t even know how to consider getting back that part of ourselves.

Then the guilt kicks in again. Feeling like we can’t step away to workout because it’s time away from our kids. Or that meal time has to be as simple as possible so we can get on to the next responsibility.

Yet that narrative truly serves no one. Spending time away from our kids to workout teaches them it’s important to be strong, healthy and that self care is an admirable quality in a person. Spending time to cook keeps us healthy and around longer to have even more time with our families and shows them that life isn’t just about getting to the next thing on the to-do list, to bring joy into the monotony of life. None of these things are bad examples/lessons for our children and id argue or invaluable actually!

So mama, today remind yourself- it’s ok to want to feel good in your body and in your mind and invest in your own health and wellness. And for anyone still feeling guilty- What you do for yourself today will likely benefit your kids or family another day, you just don’t see that direct link yet, but in time you will ♥️

Back me up here. I know all you moms out there agree with me.

At six weeks, we’re still barely sleeping. Still trying to figure out the new routine and our new identity but yet at our six week appointment we get an exam and all clear for s*x and exercise. Cool cool.

But what about at the 3 month, the 6 month, even the 18-24m mark where we are STILL healing and recovering. It can take our bodies that long to normalize. And especially so if breastfeeding.

With my first child, I didn’t physically even remotely feel like myself until she turned two. I nursed her until about 21 months and it wasn’t until I fully weaned her that I felt some semblance of physical identity again. No one ever explained the hormonal impact of nursing so long. Or the nutritional impact on me- the possibility of nutrient deficiencies. Or how I was fueling wrong for the exercise I craved but didn’t have the energy for. No one did labs on me.

It was up to me to figure that out. And to do so while in the trenches of post partum anxiety and depression, who are they kidding?

Let me be clear. This no fault of my doctor. I love my doctor. This is a system issue, more so a failure truly. I strongly believe that we should have follow up so much closer and be having much more frank conversations with our providers. The post partum period doesn’t end at 6 weeks. It’s just getting started and we deserve the medical support during that very vulnerable and frankly disregarded part of a women’s life. Everyone is excited and so supportive for someone when they are pregnant (I mean how many OB visits do we have before delivery and yet only one after??) but a few short weeks after that baby comes, it’s like the support just evaporates.

I’m not watching one more woman drowned in the abyss of post partum, not knowing why they are tired more than the sleep deprivation explains, why they’re bloated or have brain fog, why they feel weak and so easily fatigued by the shortest workout, why their cravings are insatiable. I currently have space for 5 more women in my practice who are ready to thrive and not just survive the post partum experience. Link in bio or DM me for your first a

The stats speak for themselves.

In America:
Obesity Rate: ~40%
Overweight Rate: ~32%
Combined overweight and obesity: ~72%
Underweight rate: ~1.6%

Now there are a MYRIAD of reasons why these numbers are what they are (genetics, environment, food access, sleep, stress, socioeconomic and more) but that’s not my point. My point is that we have a treatment that literally the majority of our country might benefit from, and yet daily I’m still having the conversation that weight loss medications are not failing or “cheating” or “taking the easy way out” or whatever moral spin people like to put on it.

It’s your body and you have the right to the choice and autonomy to decide if a treatment is right for you, but no one else has the right to make you feel inferior for any decisions regarding your health.

Is this conversation ever going to get old?
