MYTH: If someone with aphasia can't say the words, they don't understand.

FACT: Aphasia affects the ability to find or express words — not the ability to think, understand, or know exactly what you want to say. The words get stuck. The person doesn't.

This image comes to us from Trish Hambridge, founder of National Aphasia Synergy and a stroke survivor herself. Trish's whole approach to recovery is built on a growth mindset: aphasia isn't about what was lost, it's about what can still be built. She likes to say recovery isn't just rebuilding what's gone — it's creating something entirely new.

That mindset starts with how we treat communication. Give people time. Listen without finishing their sentences. Sit on your hands if you have to, and let the silence do its work. Patience isn't just kindness here — it's respect. It tells someone their voice is still worth waiting for.

Every voice deserves to be heard. Help us spread aphasia awareness this month — share this post so someone else can learn something new about aphasia.

As the leaves begin to change and a new chapter unfolds, September reminds us of a season of change, celebrating old friends, and that fresh starts are always possible. As we look at our circle, we are reminded that meaningful connections are always worth making!

This fall, let's slow down and make room for more connections. Give someone time to find their words. Listen patiently. Share a smile. At Voices of Hope for Aphasia, we're grateful for a community where people living with aphasia and their families can connect, communicate, and belong. Here's to a new season filled with connection, understanding, friendship, and hope.

"When Karyn first experienced aphasia after her stroke, her husband Will remembers a time when she could only communicate a few basic words like “bathroom” or “food.”

That’s the reality for many people living with aphasia. Some may struggle to speak, some may have difficulty writing, and others may not fully understand spoken conversation.

Through Voices of Hope for Aphasia, Karyn found support, community, and people who truly understood what she was going through.

It’s been over a month since Word Play 2026, and we’re still riding the incredible wave of generosity and hope!

Thank you to the hundreds of donors, sponsors, volunteers, and advocates who filled the USF Student Center to celebrate the independence to thrive. Together, we raised critical funds and awareness to help people living with aphasia reconnect with their lives through community, communication, and hope.

Because of your support, more individuals and families will have access to life-changing programs that foster connection, confidence, and belonging. Thank you for believing in a future where every voice matters.

Thank you to our sponsors!

After experiencing a stroke, Audra’s world changed in ways many people never see. But through Voices of Hope for Aphasia, she found more than support. She found friendship, laughter, confidence, and a community that understands her.

Today, Audra’s story is a reminder that aphasia may change the way someone communicates, but it does not take away their joy, personality, or ability to connect with others.

You can help support stories like Audra’s by making a donation - donations of every size are greatly appreciated and have a direct
impact on the people we serve.

After aphasia, independence can be rebuilt in moments that may seem small, but mean everything.

A conversation that feels easier. A new friendship. Sharing time with someone who understands. The confidence to show up, speak up, and enjoy the moment.

These are the moments that turn isolation into connection and progress into possibility.

From isolation to independence, every step forward deserves to be celebrated.

If you’re finding your way forward, we’re proud of you, inspired by you, and honored to celebrate every win along the way!

For Tara and her partner Donna, Voices of Hope for Aphasia has become more than a program. It’s a place filled with friendship, laughter, encouragement, and people who truly understand one another.

Donna describes our community as “a breath of fresh air,” sharing how much they love coming with Tara, watching her reconnect with friends, participate in activities, laugh, and lift others up along the way.

“It’s inspiring,” Donna says. And honestly, we couldn’t agree more.

Stories like Tara’s are exactly why Voices of Hope for Aphasia exists: to create connection, community, and support for people living with aphasia and the people who love them.
