I recently introduced daily juicing to our family, and it’s quickly become one of our favorite healthy habits.

As a functional medicine provider, I’m always looking for practical ways to increase nutrient density without making life more complicated. Juicing is one of the easiest ways to get a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and plant compounds into your day.

One of the biggest reasons I encourage a rainbow of fruits and vegetables each day is that different colors provide different nutrients and protective plant compounds. Greens offer chlorophyll, folate, and magnesium; orange and yellow produce are rich in beta-carotene and vitamin C; reds and purples contain powerful antioxidants like anthocyanins; and beets support circulation and detoxification. The more variety you eat, the more support you give your immune system, gut, liver, and cells.

When I’m working with patients recovering from chronic illness, including Lyme disease, mold-related illness, autoimmune conditions, and chronic inflammation, we spend a lot of time talking about supporting the body’s natural healing processes. Your liver and detoxification pathways rely on adequate nutrition to function well, and the foods you eat provide the building blocks your body needs for repair, recovery, and resilience.

This isn’t about finding a magic cure. It’s about consistently giving your body what it needs to do what it was designed to do.

Our family has been making this juice every morning:

• 4 kale leaves
• 4 celery stalks
• 15–20 baby carrots
• 2 apples
• 2 peeled oranges
• 1 small beet

Whenever possible, I recommend choosing organic fruits and vegetables, especially for produce that’s commonly treated with pesticides. If buying everything organic isn’t realistic, start where you can. Every positive change adds up.

We use a Nama juicer and have been really happy with it. We are not affiliates and don’t receive any compensation for recommending it. It’s simply the one we use at home and have had a great experience with.

As always, remember that healing is rarely about one thing. It’s the daily habits: nutrient-dense food, quality sleep, movement, stress management, and addressing the root causes of illness that work together over time to create lasting health.

Have you ever tried juicing, or is it something you’ve been thinking about adding to your routine?

Did you know your gut health influences nearly every system in your body?

At Base Camp Functional Medicine, we see the gut as the true foundation — the “Base Camp” for overall wellness.
Here’s why it matters:

• Digestion & Absorption: Poor gut function can lead to nutrient deficiencies even with a healthy diet.
• Immune System: Over 70% of your immune cells live in the gut.
• Hormone Balance: The gut microbiome helps regulate estrogen, thyroid, and stress hormones.
• Brain Health: The gut-brain axis means imbalances can contribute to mood, focus, and energy challenges.
• Inflammation: Leaky gut or dysbiosis often fuels chronic inflammation throughout the body.

Common signs of gut imbalance include bloating, irregular bowels, fatigue, skin issues, or stubborn weight challenges.
We take a root-cause approach: assessing microbiome health, identifying triggers (food sensitivities, infections, stress), and supporting repair through personalized nutrition, lifestyle, and targeted therapies.

True healing starts from the inside out.

GLP-1 Peptides: More Than Weight Loss

You’ve probably heard about GLP-1 medications in the context of weight loss. But these peptides do far more than change the number on the scale.

What are GLP-1 peptides?
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone your body naturally produces. It helps regulate blood sugar, appetite, digestion, and insulin release. GLP-1 peptide therapies are designed to enhance or mimic this natural process.

Benefits beyond weight loss include:
• Improved blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity
• Reduced inflammation and cardiometabolic risk
• Better appetite signaling and satiety
• Slower gastric emptying, which can support gut health and blood sugar stability
• Potential benefits for metabolic syndrome and fatty liver disease

Why this matters:
Many patients struggle with metabolic dysfunction long before weight gain becomes the obvious symptom. GLP-1 therapies can be a tool to support metabolic health at the root level, not just as a cosmetic solution.

Our approach at Base Camp Medicine:
We believe peptides should always be used thoughtfully, medically supervised, and as part of a comprehensive wellness plan that includes nutrition, accountability, movement, sleep, and lifestyle support.

While Base Camp Medicine does not currently offer GLP-1 peptide injections, we are actively educating, researching, and preparing to integrate evidence-based peptide therapies into our wellness therapeutics in the future.

Our goal is not quick fixes.
Our goal is sustainable, whole-person health.

Stay tuned as we continue to share education around peptides, metabolic health, and personalized medicine.

Why recent changes in childhood immunization policies can be a win for kids’ long-term health-

At Base Camp Functional Medicine, we view children’s health through a long-range lens. Not just what protects today, but what supports resilience, immune balance, and lifelong wellness.

Recent shifts in childhood immunization policy reflect something functional medicine has long emphasized: children are not one-size-fits-all.

Individualized risk assessment matters.
Timing, spacing, and overall immune load matter.
A child’s gut health, nutrient status, genetics, and environment matter.

When policy allows more flexibility and transparency, it creates space for informed conversations between parents and providers, rather than fear-based decision making.

From a functional perspective, true immune health isn’t built by a single intervention alone. It is supported by:
• A nourished microbiome
• Adequate vitamin D, zinc, iron, and omega-3s
• Healthy sleep and nervous system regulation
• Low toxic burden
• Thoughtful, personalized medical care

This is not about being “for” or “against” anything. It is about supporting the whole child, honoring parental discernment, and building strong immune systems that can adapt and thrive over time.

The future of pediatric health is not more pressure.
It is more education, more personalization, and more partnership.

And that is a win for kids.

Base Camp Functional Medicine also sees pediatric patients. If you want to learn more or discuss individualized care for your children, call today to schedule an appointment.

From my wife, Becki:

Jay recently shared his perspective on my health journey—what it was like to watch me suffer physically. (You can read part 1) But I want to share my perspective too—as a Christian woman who’s lived with chronic illness for many years.

I’ve lived more than 40 years with undiagnosed Lyme disease, which I contracted from a tick bite during a first-grade field trip in CO. It wasn’t until my late twenties, after our first three children were born, that I truly began to feel its weight.

At that time, Jay was serving in the Army, and we were far from family support. I faced days of preterm labor, overwhelming fatigue, and a deep postpartum depression. Jay was deployed to Iraq during this difficult period.

He was a new doctor, often working more than 140 hours a week. I’d pack the kids into the car just to share a meal with him in the hospital cafeteria.

I struggled with feelings of inadequacy—thinking maybe I lacked enough faith, or that I was being disciplined. I was short-tempered with the kids, irritable with Jay, and longing for answers. I wanted rest, and I fought to find it—reading, researching nutrition, praying. I held onto the belief that God was with me, providing just enough strength for each day.

Unbeknownst to me, we had been living in military housing filled with mold and asbestos, which was torn down a year after we moved. I had no idea what it was doing to my body.

I kept telling myself I needed to fix myself, trying everything- counseling, medication, devotionals, endless effort. It became a cycle of striving and feeling defeated. I often asked, 'Where is God in all this?’

Looking back, I know those early years of motherhood were incredibly tough. I poured my heart into raising our children—building forts, crafting, celebrating birthdays, exploring outdoors. I did everything with gusto because inside, I felt so small, so broken.

Yet, even in the midst of it all, I felt the Lord’s nearness. He whispered truths during quiet moments before bed, in worship songs that comforted me during late nights rocking babies to sleep, and in the stillness when Jay was on call and I was barely holding on.

I kept praying for healing. Jay carried so much-serving us through long work hours, praying for me, reminding me the Lord was near.

I lived like this for over 20 years. Doctors convincing me my labs were fine, that I was just anxious and needed meds. But in the 2020s, something shifted. We found a church that taught the Word-and our dry, weary family found life again. Jay began to question his allopathic training. God led him to functional
medicine colleagues, books, and new understanding.

We finally found the truth: Lyme. Mold. A plan to heal—not just my body, but our home and our hearts. God held us steady. Even when I couldn't feel it. Through desert years, the Lord was leading us to a place of healing and hope. He shaped Jay into a physician who listens and believes. And I can now look back and say-we were never alone. He heard our prayers. He carried us. I'm on a plan to recovering, and feeling more and more strength and restoration. He is so good!

I work with a lot of men at Base Camp who come in tired, unmotivated, discouraged, and aimless. They’ve lost strength—not just physically, but in their mental sharpness, confidence, and even spiritual resilience.

Here’s the truth: when men stop lifting heavy, stop fueling their bodies well, and let their hormones crash, everything suffers—testosterone, energy, clarity of purpose, and leadership in their homes.

So let’s talk strategy.

1. Strength Training Is Non-Negotiable
Muscle isn’t just for aesthetics—it’s metabolically active tissue that protects your hormones, improves insulin sensitivity, and helps you handle stress.
• Lift 3–4x/week. Focus on compound movements (deadlifts, squats, presses).
• Train hard. Use progressive overload—add weight, reps, or sets.
• Rest well. Recovery is when your body builds, not during the workout.

2. Eat to Build—Not Just to Stay Lean
So many guys under-eat or focus too much on being “cut.” But real strength starts with nourishment:

• Prioritize animal-based protein: beef, eggs, bison, salmon, pasture-raised chicken. Aim for 1g of protein per pound of ideal body weight.
• Add in healthy fats like grass-fed butter, tallow, and avocado for hormone support.
• Eat enough. Building muscle and restoring hormone levels takes a caloric surplus.

3. Testosterone Is the Engine
Low T isn’t just a lab value—it feels like brain fog, low libido, no drive, and quiet quitting on life.
• Strength training + protein = natural T boost.
• Ditch seed oils, processed foods, and soy.
• Sleep 7–9 hours in a cool, dark room.
• Get early morning sunlight—10 minutes can improve your circadian rhythm and testosterone.

4. This Is About More Than Just Looks
When you’re strong, clear-headed, and energized, you lead better. You show up for your wife, your kids, your work, and your calling.

God made your body to be resilient. Taking care of it is part of your walk with Him. Discipline in training leads to discipline in spirit. A strong body can carry a strong heart for the Kingdom.

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit…? Therefore honor God with your bodies.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Stubborn weight? Sluggish detox? MIC injections could help.

MIC = Methionine + Inositol + Choline
These are lipotropic compounds—nutrients that help your body break down and eliminate fat by supporting liver function and fat metabolism.

In short, they help your body move fat out of the liver and use it for energy—instead of storing it.

Benefits of MIC injections:
• Enhances fat metabolism
• Supports liver detox pathways
• Improves energy and mental focus
• A great add-on to weight loss, hormone support, or detox protocols

Especially helpful for those dealing with:
• Sluggish metabolism
• Hormone imbalances
• Insulin resistance
• Fatty liver or detox overload

Want to feel the difference?
Come into Base Camp to learn if MIC injections are right for your goals.

Your journey to good health starts here.
