Today is Juneteenth — June 19, 1865, the day Union troops reached Galveston, Texas and told the people enslaved there that they were free. The Emancipation Proclamation was already two and a half years old. Freedom had been the law for a long time; it just hadn't reached them yet.

We sell a plant for a living, so here's the part of this history we sit closest to. Cannabis prohibition in this country was never really about the plant. The word "ma*****na" was pushed into the language to make it sound foreign and dangerous, tied to the people using it. The drug war that followed put millions in cages — and not evenly. Black Americans have used cannabis at about the same rate as everyone else and been arrested for it several times as often.

Some of that history is why a store like ours can operate legally today while people are still sitting in prison over the same plant on our shelves. That's worth remembering on a day about freedom that arrived late.
