When is a rope actually a line? 🪢
Here’s a rule every diver and sailor learns early:
A ROPE is just cordage — unassigned, sitting in a bag, not yet put to work.
A LINE is a rope with a job.
Once it’s rigged, named, or serving a purpose — it’s a line.
→ Tow float? Line.
→ Dive reel? Line.
→ Anchor? Line.
→ Random coil in your gear bag? That’s still a rope.
There’s an old saying in seamanship: “There are no ropes on a boat.” Because every piece of cordage has a name and a function.
Same rule applies underwater.
Know your gear. Know its name. The language of diving exists for a reason — precision matters when you’re below the surface.
