I’ve been working on Brandon’s Person-Centered Plan (P*P), and it has really made me think beyond simply asking, “What services can Regional Center provide?”

Instead, I’m asking a much bigger question:

What does Brandon want his adult life to look like—and what support does he need to get there? ❤️

At 22, my biggest hope is for Brandon to become as independent as possible, but I also have to remember that this is his life and his future, not mine to design for him.

So far, I’ve identified areas we can potentially work on together:

💼 Employment and learning how to maintain a job
🏠 Independent living skills
👥 Social skills, friendships and community involvement
🚗 Transportation independence and possibly learning to drive safely
🧠 Executive functioning, organization and planning
❤️ Health, wellness and becoming more active
💰 Money management
🛡️ Personal safety, self-advocacy and greater independence

But this is only my working draft.

My next step is probably the most important one: sitting down with Brandon.

I want to ask him what HE wants to accomplish, what he wants to learn, where he wants more independence, and what kind of life he sees for himself.

Then we can build his P*P and SDP budget around those goals and identify the right supports to help him get there.

As parents, sometimes we're so accustomed to advocating for our children that we forget that part of helping them become adults is gradually helping them advocate for themselves.

My goal isn't to create a perfect plan for Brandon.

It's to help Brandon create his plan for his future. ❤️

💙 SAN DIEGO FAMILIES — I’LL BE THERE! 💙

If you have a child or adult family member with a developmental disability, mark your calendar for the **San Diego Regional Center Resource Fair!**

📅 September 26, 2026
⏰ Starting at 9:00 AM
📍 San Diego

I’ll be attending too, and I would LOVE to meet some of you in person! 🤗

There will be service providers, community organizations, resources and educational sessions all in one place.

After 22 years of navigating this journey with Brandon, one thing I've learned is that sometimes the hardest part isn't that resources don't exist...

👉 It's knowing WHAT is available.
👉 WHO to ask.
👉 And WHERE to start.

That's why I love sharing events like this with other families.

If you're planning to attend, **comment “I'M GOING” below 👇** so I know to look for you!

And if you see me there, PLEASE come say hi. 💙

Let's learn, connect and help each other navigate this journey.

When Brandon was diagnosed with autism at 3, I thought we'd caught it early. I was wrong — California has a program called Early Start for birth to age 3, and it's a completely different door than the one most of us find out about later. 💙

If I'd known back then, we could've started years sooner.

New issue of Autism with Kimmie is up — if you have a baby or toddler under 3, this one's for you. Read it here 👇

One mom's story on California's Early Start program (birth–3) and why an autism diagnosis at 3 isn't as early as it seems.

What happens to my son when I'm no longer here to help him?

That question sat quietly in the back of my mind for years — until my dad passed away, and it stopped being a "someday" question.

So I did what I always do when I don't have an answer: I went looking for one. I talked to other parents raising kids close to Brandon's age, and dug into special needs trusts, ABLE accounts, and letters of intent — the pieces I'm sharing in this week's issue of Autism with Kimmie 💙

If this is a question that's been sitting quietly in your mind too — you're not behind, and you're not alone in it.

This has been a long time coming. Sau 22 năm đồng hành cùng con trai Brandon qua hệ thống Regional Center, tôi muốn chia sẻ những gì mình đã học được — the real stories, the resources, những điều không ai nói cho mình biết từ đầu.

Mỗi tuần, tôi sẽ share real stories from our journey, useful resources, upcoming San Diego events cho gia đình mình, and a special corner in Vietnamese — Góc Kimmie — dành riêng cho cộng đồng người Việt của chúng ta.

Today, Brandon got something that means much more to me than just a brand-new Lenovo computer. 💙

His computer was funded through the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) to support him with his education and job search.

As a mom, this is one of those moments that makes me stop and think:

Sometimes the biggest barrier isn't a person's ability. It's having access to the right tools and support.

Brandon has worked hard to build his future. He earned his Associate's degree in IT with a focus on cybersecurity, continues to look for opportunities, and is working toward becoming more independent.

This computer isn't a handout.

It's a tool.

A tool that can help him:
💻 Continue learning
💼 Apply for jobs
📄 Build his résumé
🧑‍💻 Develop his skills
🌱 Move one step closer to independence

And this is something I wish more families knew:

If your child has a disability, don't assume you have to provide everything on your own.

There may be programs, agencies, vocational services, accommodations, technology assistance, and other resources available to help.

Advocacy means learning what's available and asking for it.

Sometimes you have to make the phone call.

Sometimes you have to fill out the paperwork.

Sometimes you have to ask the same question five different ways.

And sometimes you hear "no" before you hear "yes."

But don't stop advocating.

Because sometimes the right support can make the difference between "I can't" and "let's see what I can do."

Today, I'm just a proud mom watching my son get another tool to help him build his future.

💙 Brandon, keep going. Your mom believes in you.

And to all the parents raising children with disabilities:

Don't just advocate for what your child needs today. Advocate for the life they can build tomorrow.

EP. 14 — Meltdowns
Hiểu & Giảm Thời Gian Meltdown
Understanding & Reducing Meltdown Duration

Today I share what I wish I had known much earlier:

A meltdown and a tantrum are two completely different things.
And if you respond the wrong way — everything gets worse.

Today I answer the question many parents feel ashamed to ask:
‘Why does my child only eat a few foods? What am I doing wrong?’

The answer: It is not your fault. It is not your child’s fault.
This is how their brain works.
