Dietary restraint refers to the mental energy that we use to control or maintain our body weight.

The irony is, that mental energy does not always correlate with actual calorie intake.

Your clients ARE trying hard.

The real question is:

When you can’t figure out why clients aren’t following through on ‘simple’ things, why do you assume it’s a lack of knowledge or hard work?

If we want our clients to ‘commit to the process’, we have to create the environment that helps them to do so.

That means looking at the role we’re playing too.

Weight bias. I’m tired of it.

I’m not anti-fat loss, but I will not participate in a society that perpetuates body shame.

When you don’t feel good enough in your body, I will not leave you there alone.

And I will hold that position, until you find the part of you that won’t reject yourself either.

Implicit biases are unconscious, internally held beliefs shaped by cultural norms, societal structures, and personal experiences.

We ALL have them, and it’s not something we choose. It’s simply how our minds work.

However, we do need to take responsibility for them.

As coaches, it is our role to bring our biases to our awareness, and consciously examine them, so we don’t inadvertently harm our clients.

It’s not easy work. It’s uncomfortable for sure.

And if you want to make an impact on people’s lives, it is not optional.

Not raising body image with a client who feels like their body isn’t good enough...

Is not supporting autonomy.

Autonomy means being aware of what’s guiding your choices and having the choice and capacity to choose differently.

Supporting autonomy requires us to have the hard conversations that actually move clients forward.

What doubts do you have about whether or not it’s okay to facilitate fat loss?

What are you afraid will happen if you discuss body image with your clients?

What helps you to do what’s helpful, even when those fears are present?

That’s where the work is.

PS. This post is not meant to imply that body autonomy means being ‘high-performing’, just that these are contexts in which these conversations often occur.

PPS. Building body autonomy requires more than a mindset shift, and it’s normal not to feel convinced at first.

The path to body autonomy is through transforming body shame.

Your client won’t know how to ask for that, and it’s your job to coach them in a way that truly supports them.

Even when they’re frustrated with slow progress, and you panic.
Even when you’re afraid they’ll go somewhere else.

It’s not your fault if you don’t feel prepared for this.

Weight bias is embedded in nutrition pedagogy itself, and we never get taught how to support clients with their relationship with food and body.

If that’s the work you want to develop your skillset in, then you’ll love the Compassion Coach Intensive program launching October 1st.

There comes a meaningful point in body image work where you realise that your body is the most loyal relationship you’ve ever had.

No matter what you think about it or how you feel towards it, your body shows up for you every single day.

It carries you through the world and helps you engage with the people you love.
Every special memory you’ve had has been made possible by the body that you live in.

That realisation can come with a lot of sadness.
Believe or not, that’s a good thing.

On the other side of that sadness is a new relationship with your body.

Where you’re respectful of its needs for nutrition, movement and rest. Where you appreciate what it does for you, even if it’s imperfect. Where you express yourself openly, playfully, and fully.

Now, and when it inevitably changes.

That’s what true body confidence looks like.

If you feel like a failure when clients don’t lose weight, remind yourself that the real failure is reinforcing the exact process they came to you to change (aka body shame).

If you want to build long-term resilience to industry pressures, and stop questioning whether you’re doing ‘enough’,

Your own compassion practise is not optional.

If you’re working on your body image, but can’t quite shake the belief that your appearance is somehow a reflection of who you are,

Here are some questions to take your time over:

• Where did I learn that my body is a reflection of my character?
• What does holding on to that belief protect me from?
• If I chose to let go of this belief, what reality would I have to face?
• What helps me develop the courage and strength to do that?

These questions aren’t easy, but discovering the answers,

And doing the hard work of embodying them day to day,

Is the path to the body confidence you’re seeking.

And that’s when you’ll truly be free.
