So grateful for the opportunity to learn two Raku techniques from master potter in his studio in collaboration with .friends . We were able to work with Alex’s pieces to do Obvara and a glaze technique. It was amazing to see how vastly different the same glaze turned out on different pieces depending on how the oxidation occurred in the metal buckets. The clay is Bruce’s white with Terra Sigilata then dip glazed with 1 coat of ‘Tin can’. I opted not to combine glazes and the moon jar has so much complexity simply from the firing. Obvarra required much more technical skill, being quick + decisive seemed to be the most effective.

The really *cool* thing about pottery is that it forces you to slow down in@the most brutal way. I’m often asked when and if I will have another baby, and the truth is that it’s very unlikely. Pregnancy was actually such a joy and even though it wasn’t always easy- it went smoothly and after a 6 hour labor, I consider myself blessed to have been healthy and nourished throughout postpartum too. Motherhood has healed parts of me that needed tenderness and steadfast commitment to even the smallest moments. I became a mother at 20 years old and made an agreement to myself that if the only purposeful thing I do in this lifetime is care for my semillita, I would. I am so proud of who she is and who she is becoming. Happy Mother’s Day 🏵️🌊🐚🕊️🪶

I will be reflecting on last night’s film screening of The Long Labor for awhile, and I wanted to create space for this particular moment because although I am the Secretary of the board and I’m on several committees, I’m also the unofficial gift giver and I absolutely love this task. I’ve been told that I’m a particularly skilled gift giver and it brings me so much joy for to give gifts that help my people feel seen and appreciated. If I’ve ever given you a gift, please know that it comes from a place of abundance and love.

Midwifery is often romanticized- in an effort for this space to be more humanized, it’s fun for me to share who I am beyond supporting families- a forever student to land based practices that allow me to expand and process. I learned hand building in high school and have taken pottery classes here and there, but last year I took a 6- week intro to wheel throwing class and am now a member at , practicing as much as I can in an effort to cultivate skill beyond what the occasional class offered. So here are a few of the pieces that have survived the most recent kiln firing. You can see that some of them have cracks and I can see how the pieces gradually became better as I worked. I threw all of these on the same day, and rushed the glazing but I’m proud of these lil babies and what the time in the studio has offered me.
