These common medications can cause bone loss and many aren’t even being warned about it

Osteopenia, bone stress injuries and bone density all share an intimate connection with nutritional intake and the hormonal environment, particular estrogen and thyroid hormones in women.

In this week’s podcast episode I’m joined by Dr. John Neustadt to discuss what causes bone loss, hidden factors like these common medications that may aren’t aware of and the limitations with bone mineral density testing like DEXA scans for predicting fracture risk.

If you’re a woman who has breastfed for extended periods, experienced amenorrhea or had low estrogen levels or maybe even have a history of bone stress injuries or osteopenia, this episode is a must listen.

The 4 energy leaks that drive Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue isn’t an endpoint, it’s a clue.

Most people focus on trying to create more energy. The better question is: where is my body spending excess energy that it shouldn’t have to?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with where to start I have a free quiz that helps you identify your top energy leak to focus on.

This week’s blog also walks you through a couple of recent patient examples who were experiencing chronic fatigue syndrome and that we helped not just restore their energy but also improve their hormone regulation and so much more.

Comment QUIZ for a link to take the quiz or FATIGUE for the case studies and I’ll send you the direct links!

If your “root cause” approach is starting to feel like a different version of the bandaids you were trying to get away from, it may be because nobody is actually closing the loop on your healing.

The problem with one-off protocols, isolated appointments, giant lab panels, and DIY healing is that it can quickly turn into symptom whack-a-mole and endless information gathering without a real long-term strategy.

And this is why so many people still feel stuck.

You’ve done the labs. Taken the supplements. Changed your lifestyle.

But the second you stop any of it, everything falls apart again, making it feel like you have to be perfect forever just to function.

But isn’t the goal of healing, freedom?

To travel, eat out, exercise, live your life, and not feel controlled by symptoms, routines, or fear around your health?

Real healing should create more capacity, not more restriction.

Comment “147” and I’ll send you this week’s podcast episode on realistic healing timelines and what true root-cause healing actually looks like.

Dealing with persistent gut infections like H. pylori that keep coming back no matter how many protocols and treatment plans you do?

Today, one of our clinicians, is breaking down a pattern we often see inside our practice.

Three major root causes are often missed when treating gut dysbiosis:
• The oral-gut microbiome connection
• Reinoculation
• Immune capacity

If we don’t address these factors, we can get stuck in a cycle where symptoms temporarily improve, but then come right back.

This is exactly why our approach goes deeper, considering how different body systems are interconnected, and the role that your environment may be playing in your healing procress.

Most people don’t associate exercise with leaky gut, but intense exercise itself can temporarily increase intestinal permeability or ‘leaky gut,’ especially when paired with poor exercise fueling and hot temperatures.

When this occurs, bacterial compounds, toxins, and partially digested food particles can pass through the gut barrier into circulation, triggering an immune and inflammatory response.

Leaky gut is one of the proposed drivers of autoimmunity, making this connection even more important in athletes with autoimmunity.

To learn more about the leaky gut - autoimmunity connection in athletes, comment autoimmunity athletes and I’ll send you the link to this weeks blog.

One of the ways our body becomes stronger and fitter from exercise is through a process called oxidative stress production.

But when autoimmunity is present, there is already elevated immune activation, inflammation, and oxidative stress occurring in the background.

This means your body’s capacity for more oxidative stress from exercise is limited.

So when the additional exercise oxdiative stress is layered onto a system with high loads of oxidative stresss, the body may struggle to adapt appropriately.

This is one reason it may feel harder to see the adaptations and why exercise can easily inflam your body if you push too hard, especially if you’re in an autoimmune flare.

In this week’s blog, we unpack why athletes and highly active individuals can still develop autoimmunity despite their healthy habits and explore the overlap between exercise stress, recovery capacity, inflammation, and immune dysfunction.

Because once you understand what’s happening beneath the surface you can actually work with your body to better manage your autoimmunity while improving exercise tolerance and ultimately seeing better outcomes from training.

Mouth breathing affects your body in more ways than just oxygen intake.

Your lymphatic system relies heavily on diaphragmatic movement and pressure changes to circulate lymphatic fluid, clear waste, support immune function, and regulate inflammation. Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump. It depends on movement and good breathing mechanics.

When breathing becomes shallow and chest-dominant (which is incredibly common with chronic mouth breathing), lymphatic circulation can become less efficient and the nervous system often stays in a more sympathetic, stress-driven state.

This is part of why breathing mechanics matter so much for adrenal and thyroid balance, inflammation, immune function, and even exercise tolerance.

What’s fascinating is that research has shown up to 91% of athletes demonstrate dysfunctional breathing patterns despite being highly fit.

Meaning, you can be “in shape” and still not be breathing well.

On this week’s podcast episode, we break down everything you should know about how your breathing patterns affect your health and simple solutions you can implement each day to improve your breathing mechanics.

Feeling like your body is resisting exercise lately?

It may not be a discipline problem but instead your body’s effort to conserve energy for good reason.

Our body is wise. When there’s what I can ‘energy leaks’ occurring, energy diversion is being allocated towards them which means there’s not enough leftover energy to fund additional stressors like exercise.

So while exercise is what we call a hormetic stressor because it is a good stressor that causes positive changes in the body. When our cells are in conservation mode, it actually becomes quite the opposite. Contributing towards oxidative stress and mitochondrial energy depletion.

In this weeks podcast episode I explain this concept of energy leaks, what the main 4 are and why they’re the most common issue we see in our patients that come in with a history of regular exercise or an athletic history but currently struggling to uphold this activity level.

New name, same mission.

To help active and high-performing women finally understand their bodies better by bridging functional medicine, metabolism, and performance science into actionable education that empowers them to heal at the root cause, not just manage symptoms.

You can still expect new weekly episodes every Wednesday, and I’m so excited to start sharing more concepts from my upcoming book ahead of its release early next year.

Thank you so much for being here and listening over the years. This podcast has truly become one of my favorite parts of what I do, and nothing means more than hearing how these conversations have helped change your health and life for the better 🤎
