Diabetes and sleep apnea don't just coexist—they fuel each other. My latest Sleep, Smiles & Synapses newsletter explains why recognizing this dangerous cycle is critical for better patient outcomes.

We often hear about the critical connection between diet, exercise, and diabetes management. But what about sleep? Emerging research is shedding light on a profound and often overlooked link between metabolic health and sleep disorders, particularly Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and insomnia.

New research from ATS 2026 is shining a spotlight on positional therapy as an effective, non-invasive option for sleep apnea—read more in my latest newsletter, Beyond CPAP: Positional Therapy Re-emerges as a Game-Changer for Sleep Apnea.

For many individuals struggling with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), the thought of CPAP can be daunting. While highly effective, it's not for everyone.

Grateful to the San Diego County Dental Society for the invitation to speak on integrating sleep and airway into the dental practice.

It’s encouraging to see so many colleagues leaning into a more comprehensive approach—recognizing that what we do goes far beyond teeth. When we begin to identify and address airway and sleep issues, we have the opportunity to truly impact our patients’ overall health and quality of life.

I’m especially thankful to have shared the experience alongside such dedicated colleagues, Dr. Juergen Langenbach MAGD Dr. Med. Dent. and Dr. Richard Hagstrom. Conversations like these are how we continue to evolve as a profession and better serve our communities.

Looking forward to keeping the momentum going.

Beyond the AHI explores how a new AI-driven metric is reshaping the way we understand, diagnose, and treat obstructive sleep apnea.

For years, the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) has been the gold standard for diagnosing Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). But what if the traditional measure was missing a crucial part of the story, especially for women and those with milder forms of the condition? New research published in Nature Communic

A New Hope: Is Alzheimer's Disease Reversible? The NAD+ Breakthrough

Challenging a Century-Old Assumption
For over a century, the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease has carried a heavy, seemingly irreversible prognosis. The focus of research has largely been on slowing the progression of the disease by targeting the build-up of amyloid plaques and tau tangles. But a groundbreaking study from University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, published in Cell Reports Medicine, is challenging this fundamental assumption.

The study, conducted in mouse models of Alzheimer's, found that restoring the balance of a crucial cellular energy molecule—Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+)—not only halted the disease but fully reversed cognitive function and cleared the toxic protein markers.

The Brain's Energy Crisis
NAD+ is essential for energy production, cell maintenance, and DNA repair. Its levels naturally decline with age, and the researchers found a severe depletion of NAD+ in the brains of Alzheimer's mouse models. This suggests that Alzheimer's may, in part, be a brain energy crisis.

By using a medication called P7C3-A20 to restore NAD+ to normal levels, the scientists achieved a stunning result: the mice with advanced Alzheimer's regained their cognitive function.

"For more than a century, Alzheimer's has been considered irreversible. Our experiments provide a proof of principle that some forms of dementia may not be inevitably permanent."

This is a massive shift in perspective. It suggests that the key to unlocking the brain's recovery may lie not just in clearing the plaques, but in re-energizing the brain's own cellular machinery.

What This Means for You
While this research is currently in animal models, its implications are profound. It opens a completely new, non-amyloid-centric avenue for drug development.

It also reinforces the importance of lifestyle factors that support NAD+ levels and overall brain health, such as prioritizing sufficient sleep. Sleep is the brain's natural restorative process, crucial for clearing waste and maintaining cellular energy balance.
