I see folks prepare the nursery, wash every tiny onesie, take the prenatal classes, buy the Cadillac stroller, make the registry and still be WILDLY underprepared for what happens to YOU when you become somebodyâs mama.â¨
So letâs get into itâŚshalt we?
â¨Sleep deprivation is real. Every parent tells you this. But you donât know what you donât know. Let me tell you ⌠it can have you arguing with somebody you actually like at 3am. And after that, decide you actually despise them. â¨â¨You might resent your partner, especially when parts of their old life seem to continue while yours has changed overnight. No one likes to say this but Iâll say it: IT IS UNFAIR. â¨â¨If you have the resources, having a couples therapist already in the mix BEFORE s**t gets hard is worth considering.â¨
You may hear your baby crying when they absolutely are not crying. Your body may feel foreign for a while. And I really wish we gave women more room to grieve that without immediately rushing them toward loving, accepting, fixing or shrinking it. You grew an entire human. There is no âsnapping back.â There is only forward. Please begin unfollowing accounts NOW of that kinda content if you wanna remain sane.â¨
And donât get me started on that weak ass 6 week checkup. Whew. I have thoughtsâŚ.One appointment cannot possibly address every physical, emotional, sexual, hormonal and practical question that can come with becoming a mother. â¨â¨But since youâre gonna go to it anyway, I recommend that you write your questions down. Bring them with you. Keep asking them afterward.
â¨And please build your people. A strong support network means knowing who you can call at 2pm on a random Tuesday when youâre losing your s**t. Who can bring food? Who can hold the baby? Who can listen without trying to fix you? Who can pick up the phone? Who can come over?â¨
Everybody spends months preparing you to have a baby.
I want us to get a whole lot better at preparing you to become a mother.â¨
