Happy ! Made you look! Brunch may be over but the work to defeat MAGA is ongoing! Check the Mamas and Aunties Defeating Fascism/Seed the Vote pod's link in bio.

October is a reminder of history - and a legacy of people power, solidarity, & makibaka spirit!

πŸ₯₯ Coconuts are seeds 🫘 πŸ«› 🌱- and it was joy to cook a coconut (seed) infused brunch for a (seed)pod fundraiser for aunties and mamas mobilizing for Seed the Vote!

🫘 As a mama and auntie, I believe in the power of rad mamas and aunties. I SEE & FEEL their determination, purpose, & clarity. Their unstoppable joy. β˜€οΈ

I believe my daughter, & all of us, deserve a present & future that honors the right to bodily autonomy, to clean air, water, & land, to healthy food, to dignified healthcare, to climate solutions, to truth beyond this chapter of distortion & disinformation.

We know the stakes right now are high...& we see our beloved community, mamas, aunties, neighbors, friends, and family step up!

πŸ«› There's still time to plug in - join a pod, letter writing, volunteering, phone banking, get your feet in the streets, donate, reach out to friends and family in battleground states. And check in on each otherπŸ₯₯

Bitter Is Beautiful. Tks for a celebratory & plant nerd πŸ€“ cook-along & story sharing space! Shout-out for the ampalaya medicine you grow & for a story that resonated - the foods fed to us out of a loving desire to keep us healthy, even if it tasted like struggle to us as kids πŸ’š I had the chance to invite my dad, an ampalaya officionado who likes his bittermelon "crispy & bitter," for an interview. I learned something new: among their first dates, my parents ate a bittermelon dish at a Chinese restaurant in Manila. πŸ’š I invited several bittermelon appreciative folks to contribute a word or phrase to a collective poem read on Sun, excerpts below! Y'all are lyrical & the full entries should be a book of poems! This is incomplete - bittermelon fans pls add to the ode in comments if you feel called: πŸ’š The things that heal don't always go down easily πŸ’š Rainbows of ampalaya ...straight up converted this Jewish boy to bittermelon worship πŸ’š It's good for you, they say πŸ’š With bitter comes the sweet πŸ’š Community, connections, curiosity, recipes known & new ones to unfold πŸ’š Sweetness of my grandmother resides in the bitter sun warmed skin πŸ’š Litter, glitter, fritter, critter, bitter πŸ’š Embrace the bitter, it nourishes our laughter πŸ’š when we eat the bitterness of this gourd we are reminded of obstacles in the previous year...bitter rids us of our challenges πŸ’š you must learn to eat the bitterness. Salamat Amy, David, Tracy, Farzana, Roshni, Sita, Rosalie, Hai, Pankaj

How do we mend a broken heart, how do we nourish grief? These are the kinds of questions has brought into conversations spanning our friendship as well as to wider circles in her work in palliative care, the arts, and creative work that touch on grief, cycles of change, ancestral memory, and connections to food as a medium. Here is a beautiful offering that weaves together stories and recipes of comfort and connection, and also benefits continued Covid relief efforts in India. Add this to your holiday gift guide please! What is Filipino American History month about? We can all learn from the life work of Prof. Dawn Mabalon. As historian, activist, teacher, baker, writer, foodways researcher, and so much more, hers is the work that bridged stories the ancestors and manongs dont want us to forget, and lifted up narratives critical to healing and empowerment within our communities today. Among the many gifts she left us with is an illustrated book, "Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong" co-written with Gayle Romasanta and iIlustrated by Andre Sibayan. This is the very first children’s book on Filipino American history, and the first about Larry Itliong, co-founder of the United Farm Workers, weaving in the often erased or untold narratives of Filipino American farmworkers in the fight for dignity and justice. Maraming Salamat Po, Dawn πŸ’“πŸ’“πŸ’“

Rooted Wisdom podcast episodes are out! You're invited to tune in to these stories. Just imagine yourself there around the kitchen with us. On a personal tip, it feels right to have these come out in October. This is a time when the seasons change. The veils grow thin. Ancestors feel closer. Indigenous Peoples Day, Filipino American History Month, Dia de los Mu***os, and Undas (& other times of reflection and honoring) converge. I'm glad we dreamed this project into being together and then amazing people made it happen. from 🎧Episode 2 of Rooted Wisdom is out now! Link in our bio.

This episode bridges the wisdom of a Farmer Reformer and a Community Strategist to discuss grounding a global mindset in local work. The Reformer, MartΓn Lemos, is the Co-Executive Director of the National Young Farmers Coalition ( ). The Strategist, Ma’raj Sheikh ( ), is the Systems and Strategy Manager of the Chicago Food Policy Action Council.

Is it possible to feed communities and the world without capitalism? What happens if people have more opportunities to encounter land and food production up close?

Learn about the ways different communities look at food, the importance of developing local and global mindsets, and navigating food politics while creating a path toward a resilient & equitable local food system.

Caption: β€œMy favorite way to organize people around a meal is through some way of bringing people around the table with a story, with an understanding of where that food comes from, or with some kind of core values that bring us all together,” - Ma'raj Sheikh

Thanking my lucky stars (& the full moon) for the soul-grounding philosophy, history, & community spirit of project & dear comrade and kasama πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š with all the wildness about, it is strengthening to learn reminders on continuity from seeds & the people who love them. To taste & share in a cycle of remembering, to learn from lifetimes of change, resistance, & movement embedded in a seed. Because of this sharing, perilla has become a beloved rice thief our family now can welcome to our dinner tables. Adorable melons like chamoe are not only known as delicious & refreshing, but as teachers, vital characters in agrarian-led histories of Korean demilitarism & resistance - histories that span continents and that everyone should learn about. Densely textured & flavored hobak squashes are devoured like candy by my toddler. If you haven't learned about Second Generation Seeds project yet, visit the website for living treasure. You don't have to live in CA or the West Coast - this is a space to learn & share from a farmer-led & community nurtured circle!
