The San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center

The San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center (샌프란시스코 베이지역 한인회), Non-profit organization, the Korean Wave The San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center lost its vibrancy.

I, Jonathan Kim, president of the Jin Duck & Kyung Sik Kim Foundation and the 32nd president of the San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center (SFBAKC), declare as follows:

San Francisco and the greater Bay Area holds great geopolitical significance to Koreans living in Korea and abroad and especially for Korean Americans who call it home. In 1905, Dosan Ahn Chang-ho established the Public Associatio

n and in 1909, he established the Korean National Association, the United States’s first Korean Association. In 1908, In-Hwan Jang and Myeong-Woon Jeon announced the beginning of the resistance movement against Japanese imperialism. I am inspired by the work begun by these and other Korean-American trailblazers. Twelve years ago, I established the Jin Duck & Kyung Sik Kim Foundation to help the people in the Peninsula Bay Area. Since its creation, the foundation has provided scholarships, tackled the issue of Dokdo and installed the Comfort Women Monuments in San Francisco, Seoul, and Nanjing. The COVID-19 pandemic curtailed many of the foundation's normal activities. During 2020, the foundation shifted its focus to PPE and supplying masks first to Korea then to the community. The pandemic also took a toll on the Korean American community in Northern California. As the 32nd president of San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center, I hope to reinvigorate SFBAKC activities with a four-part action, as follows:

First, I will do my best to complete the repair of the San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center(SF Han In Hweh) as soon as possible. The reason this is a top priority for me is because SF Han In Hweh can provide opportunities for exchange and recreation in a safe, inclusive environment. The faster we complete the construction, the faster the senior citizens' associations and many other groups can begin to use it. Second, the San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center must strive for transparency. We will publish all board meeting minutes and financial reports on SFBAKC’s website. I will create and implement a calendar system in which any group can request use of the SF Han In Hweh’s facilities. This way, the San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center can serve the needs of the entire community. Third, the San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center will assist and encourage its members and community at large to participate in elections. Actively participating in the democratic process will allow our community to vote for leaders to represent us, our ideas, and our interests. Lastly, during my tenure as 32nd president of SFBAKC, I will increase the number of volunteers in my executive team. Increased participation will create more diversity and inclusiveness which will lead to better decision making and problem solving and bring greater opportunity for the maximum amount of people. Thank you.

The Jin Duck & Kyung S*k Kim Foundation Donates $20,000 to Support the Korean Language Class at Lowell High School The Jin Duck & Kyung S*k Kim Foundation (CEO Dr. Jonathan H. Kim, Chairperson Soon Ran Kim) has once again donated $20,000 this year to support the Korean language class at Lowell High School in San Francisco, following last year’s contribution. On March 12 at 4 PM, a donation ceremony was held at the San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center, where CEO Dr. Jonathan H. Kim also serves as president. At the event, Dr. Jonathan H. Kim, Chairperson Soon Ran Kim, and Chief Financial Officer Soon Ok Kim presented the donation to John Bautista, the principal of Lowell High School. Also, in attendance were Doyeon Kim and Eunmi Jo, instructors of the Korean language class at Lowell High School. The event was also graced by San Francisco Consul General Jeongtaek Lim and San Francisco Korean Education Center Director Hyejung Heo. 32 Years of Korean Language Education at Lowell High School As a prestigious high school representing San Francisco, Lowell High School has been offering Korean language classes for 32 years since their establishment in 1993. Recently, the growing popularity of Korean culture—often referred to as the "Hallyu" (Korean Wave)—including K-pop and K-dramas, has led to an increasing number of students enrolling in Korean language classes. However, due to budget constraints, the number of Korean language classes was at risk of being reduced from seven to five last year. The Jin Duck & Kyung S*k Kim Foundation’s $20,000 donation helped maintain all seven classes. This year, the foundation once again decided to provide financial support, believing that teaching Korean and Korean culture to the next generation is crucial for expanding the presence of the Korean language in mainstream society. Strengthening the Korea-U.S. Alliance Through Korean Education Furthermore, it could enhance pro-Korean sentiment in the U.S. and contribute to strengthening the Korea-U.S. alliance. CEO Dr. Jonathan H. Kim stated, "Learning a country's language means understanding its history and culture. By financially supporting Lowell High School students who will become future global leaders, we hope to provide more opportunities for Korean language education, foster a friendly atmosphere toward Korea, and contribute to strengthening both the Korea-U.S. alliance and the rights and development of the Korean-American community." Cultural Experience Program for Korean Language Students Last year, students from the Lowell High School Korean language class who received support from the Jin Duck & Kyung S*k Kim Foundation visited the San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center to participate in a Korean cultural experience class. During this session, students took quizzes on Korean history, economic development, and Korean-American immigration history, deepening their understanding of Korea. President Kim provided meals and gifts to the students as part of the program. Additionally, Daniel Lurie, the current Mayor of San Francisco, attended the event while he was a candidate at the time. His presence demonstrated great interest in the initiative, and he actively encouraged the students while strengthening ties with the Korean-American community.
