Over the past week, it’s been brought to my attention that there is a piece of accountability I missed connected to an incident 11 years ago involving the IMsL/BB T-shirt event.
At the time, there was significant anger, public discourse, and harm being named. In the years since, I have worked to take accountability through public apologies, therapy, mentorship, and continued volunteering and involvement in community spaces.
What I failed to fully name and acknowledge: until now, is an additional harm I caused during that time.
In a heated online exchange, I referenced someone’s involvement in gun play and publicly used their government name. That was harmful. Regardless of context, I exposed them to potential legal and personal risk in a community that is already vulnerable to policing, surveillance, and targeted harm.
I take full responsibility for that decision.
To the person directly impacted: I am sorry for the harm and risk I created.
To the community: I apologize for contributing to an environment where someone’s safety could be compromised.
This is bigger than a single moment. As a community, we have a shared responsibility to protect one another, especially in conflict. That includes being mindful of what we disclose, how we engage publicly, and the potential consequences our words can carry beyond the moment.
My actions in that exchange fell short of that responsibility.
I want to be clear: I do not support involving law enforcement or creating pathways for harm toward members of our community in any way. Protecting each other must remain a baseline, not a conditional choice.
Through ongoing accountability work, I have focused on not reacting from heightened emotion and on understanding the broader impact of my actions. I am committed to not crossing that line ever again.
Accountability is ongoing. Naming this harm is part of that, and I remain committed to showing up with integrity, care, and responsibility to this community, both publicly and privately.
