20-Stall Horse Barn Renovation Progress at Standing Rock Ranch

Here is an update on the transformation of the Standing Rock Ranch 20-stall horse barn. It is beginning to take shape.

After years of poor drainage, malfunctioning gutters, and a leaking roof, we were left with rotting rafters and structural roof supports. Much of the damaged structure had to be removed and rebuilt before we could install a new roof, gutters, and siding.

We opened one side of the barn and converted the windows into stall doors leading to outdoor runs for the horses. We are now finishing the interiors of the stalls, completing the electrical and plumbing work, and painting everything. There is still plenty of work ahead, but the progress is becoming visible, and I was excited to share!

Standing Rock Ranch Tour Part 3 | The Gathering Grounds

This video is a vision of the future Gathering Grounds at Standing Rock Ranch in Grass Valley, California.

Overlooking the lake, the Gathering Grounds are being imagined as a sacred space for our Horse Healing Retreats, ceremony, movement, music, and community. At the center will be a large labyrinth surrounded by spaces representing the four elements.

The images in this video are conceptual renderings, created to visualize what plan to build as we restore and prepare Standing Rock Ranch.

What makes this place especially meaningful is what is already here. Within the bedrock are ancient acorn grinding mortars, reminders of the Indigenous people who lived on and cared for this land long before us. As we create something new, our intention is to do so with reverence for the land, the horses, and the history held here.

This is the vision. Now we begin bringing it to life.

Medicine of the Herd isn’t something the horses do to us. It comes from being in relationship with them. Living together. Playing together. Caring for each other. Remembering that we are part of nature, not separate from it.

Here is the Starr Horse herd from our documentary Medicine of the Herd this morning at hay time. 🐴❤️

We’re training a new caretaker for the herd who graduated from our Spring 2026 Holistic Clicker Training program. Medicine of the Herd was filmed right here during our Spring 2025 program, with these seventeen horses at the heart of the story.

And some wonderful news—Medicine of the Herd has just been officially selected for the 2026 EQUUS Film & Arts Fest in Midway, Kentucky! 🐴🎬
