Bagong Liwanag (A New Light) at FANHS Museum on November 17. Rsvp link on profile.

Bringing the exhibit to Stockton is significant, and here’s why:

*****
Stockton, CA, has been the center of Filipina/o American history since immigrants from the Philippines settled in San Joaquin County in 1898. Originally a town sustaining Gold Rush migrants in the 1850s, from the 1920s to the 1970s, six square blocks in downtown Stockton called Little Manila became the destination for Filipina/os in the U.S. searching for work, safety, and community amid extreme anti-Asian violence and the destabilizing effects of U.S. imperialism in the Pacific.

The late Dr. Dawn Bohulano Mabalon stated that all roads in Filipina/o American history led to Stockton’s Little Manila. Today, they still do. The ethnic enclave’s hotels, dance halls, churches, union halls, grocery stores, and restaurants in the city’s “Oriental Quarter” that included Chinatown and Nihonmachi cultivated vibrant social worlds where manangs and manongs lived, loved, mobilized, organized, and asserted their dignity despite constant threats of annihilation. Today, despite the demolition of the area due to racially biased 1960s freeway construction, vestiges of those traditions of resistance –and the rich community that fostered it -still exist.

Stockton raised Flora Arca Mata, California’s first Filipina American teacher. It was the home of Filipino American labor organizer Larry Itliong and the site of the 1948 asparagus strike. The Stockton Civic Auditorium hosted numerous historic boxing matches showcasing Filipino pugilistic prowess. The city nurtured the growth of escrima and other Filipino martial arts since the 1970s through Grandmaster Leo Giron’s Bahala Na system. Farmers markets showcasing produce from across the county – including from the Filipino Farm Center in nearby Lathrop – reinforce Stockton’s pivotal agricultural role.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Bagong Liwanag (A New Light) is a solo exhibit by Jeff M-Seva Quintano and a documentary screening about Baybayin revival, through tattoo art. The exhibit showcases the Baybayin tattoo movement, which is transforming tattooing’s cultural stigma and reconnecting Filipinos with their heritage. After a successful debut at the Sentro Filipino Cultural Center and a feature at the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco, Bagong Liwanag is now on tour. Its third stop will be at the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) Museum in Stockton, California, on November 17, 2024.

⚡️⚡️ROSIE CAMANGA (1910-??)⚡️⚡️

Moved to Honolulu from the Philippines before World War 2. Started tattooing in 1944 along with many Filipino tattooers in Chinatown.

Sailor Jerry introduced Ed Hardy to Rosie in 1968. At that time, Jerry and Rosie had the only two tattoo shops on the island of Oahu.

A book about him was published by Ed Hardy and has just been reprinted by Taki and Molly Kitamura, highlighting his significance in modern-day tattooing.

“FOLK ART TATTOO FLASH” perfect book title as Rosie’s works reflects the culture, community, life, and stories of his time. His artworks are unsigned and undated, but the images provide clues about when it was created.

He’s one of my favorites as his work documents the present (his present), it has the soul of his era. It is true and honest.

“Rosie was a complete original. Rosie is the real thing.“ -Ed Hardy

🎉 JOIN US THIS SATURDAY (July 20) 🎉 for ROSIE FLASH DAY at State of Grace Tattoo in San Jose, 11am-7pm. First 10 customers get a free book with their tattoo.

Honored to be one of the invited artists to celebrate Rosie’s works. Thank you to Taki, Molly, Ed Hardy and Hardy Marks Publication for spreading global awareness about him.

Special mention to Tito Gavina for continuously promoting Rosie’s work here in the US and to Kiyo Tawara for doing the same in the Philippines.

Thank you and see you all this Saturday!
