Let’s talk about pumping!

Mama, I get it. The panic that sets in when you pump a full session and remove your bottles to see what *looks* like very little can be paralyzing. And yes, there are definitely things we can troubleshoot! Especially if you’re returning to work and making pumped milk your baby’s sole nutrition, let’s talk immediately!

But in the meantime, when that first “oh no” hits and your mind starts racing, remember that your pump is not your baby, and not pumping a freezer full of extra milk doesn’t mean that your baby isn’t getting exactly what they need when they nurse. As moms, we would *never* forget to care for our children, but we often forget to care for ourselves. Life gets busy, we try to do it all (and do it perfectly), and before we know it, the burnout sets in.

This idea that we have to be the "perfect mother" is just one factor that has led to a significant increase - nearly 65% - in mothers who report experiencing poor mental health outcomes over the last decade, as reported by the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health. Similarly, other researchers report that over half (64%) of mothers consciously hide emotional and physical stress while also taking on 71% or more of a household's mental load, leading to increased burnout and other negative health affects.

Take some time today to practice self care. Spend a few minutes outside, breathing in fresh air. Read a great book. Pick up a coffee from your favorite local spot. Snuggle your baby a little extra. Whatever the thing is that resets your heart, do a little of that today. And if things are a little too tough? Reach out for help. There are amazing local resources that can support you as you get back to feeling like yourself again.

You are already your baby's Super Mom. There is only one you, and you are everything your baby needs. As you take care of your family, remember to take care of yourself, too.
