🩺You don’t need to be a good patient. ⁣

First of all (Assuming that your are in a low risk pregnancy) you are NOT not sick. Pregnancy and childbirth are not illnesses.⁣

👩🏽‍⚕️🧑🏽‍⚕️It is OK to deny interventions or care, request a new nurse/OB, or break hospital policy. You will not get in trouble- I promise! Advocating what’s best for your baby starts in the delivery room. The worst thing that will happen is that you’ll p**s someone off. ⁣

During my birth they wanted me to put my feet in stirrups but I refused. The nurse snapped back, “why not?”. The staff was obviously irritated but so was I! I shouldn’t have to explain myself. ⁣

👉🏽There were also times in my birth where I gave in and compromised when I didn’t have to. Sometimes it happens and that’s ok too. We do the best we can in the moment. ⁣

*This also applies to fertility treatments. Always ask questions! Do your research and speak up if you feel like something isn’t working for you!⁣

Was there a time that you weren’t a “good” patient?

Anyone else??? 😅

Today on Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day we bring awareness to the little hearts that stopped beating too soon. ⁣

For the parents of these babies today is just another day. So how do we support them?⁣

- Listen first. Let them share whatever they would like to share without interruption. Example: “I’m here to listen whenever you are ready. I’d love to hear the story of your baby.” ⁣
- Bring a meal. The body still goes through all the postpartum hormone shifts regardless of the gestational age. Support the parents the same way you would support any other couple who just had a baby.⁣
- Reach out to a bereavement doula.⁣
- Keep checking back on them without expectations. ⁣

——————⁣

As a person who is in the midst of pregnancy after loss I can attest to the disconnect that inherently happens when our hearts are so guarded. I’m now 34 weeks and no amount of meditation, breathing or self-hypnosis can make me feel connected to the life inside me. So what do I do? I take each day as it comes trusting that eventually I will look at my baby and my heart will connect with theirs. I live without judgement for myself or my experience. There is no right or wrong way to be pregnant. ⁣

Starting September 1st Texas will have a “heartbeat ban” meaning pregnant people cannot get an abortion after 6 weeks, when many women are just finding out that they are pregnant. This INCLUDES pregnancies as a result of r**e or in**st.

From loving like a mother, double pink lines, growing a baby, birth, parenthood, and all the in-betweens - each stage makes you a mother. Regardless of length of time, loss, or how you got there. The minute you give your heart to take care of another, you are a mother. ⁣

Happy Mother’s Day to all the biological Mothers, bereaved Mothers, adoptive Mothers, surrogate Mothers, angel Mothers, and the Mothers waiting for their moment.⁣
_____________⁣

For me, this Mother’s Day is really triggering my imposter syndrome. I am now over 11 weeks pregnant and yet pregnancy after loss and infertility has me feeling like I don’t belong here. I’ve already received cards, messages and gifts, yet they feel like they belong to someone else. So today I will celebrate how far i’ve come and the undeniable truth that I’ve been a mother for a long time and one day I will feel it. ⁣

❓So when is a “safe” time to announce your pregnancy?⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Whenever feels right for you! There is no right or wrong answer.⁣⠀
⁣⠀
🤰🏽Traditionally speaking, most people wait until the beginning of the second trimester, about 13 weeks, to publicly announce their pregnancy. The reason being that the risk of miscarriage drops off significantly and at that point is more unlikely to happen.⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Thankfully, nowadays, talk of miscarriage is normalizing which has people celebrating their pregnancies a lot sooner. ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
👉🏽For me, today seems like a good day to share that I’m pregnant! It took me a few weeks to settle into the idea and honestly i’m still getting used to it. My closest family and friends have known since the beginning. After a few weeks of bedrest and uncertainty we have finally graduated from our fertility clinic and are hopeful for the future. One day at a time. One breath at a time. ⁣⠀

1 in 8 couples struggle with infertility. ⠀

1 in 8 isn’t just a statistic. It’s me and my husband. It’s your best friend, your brother-in-law, your coworker. It could be anyone around you. For this reason it is incredibly important that we spread awareness, educate and inspire others to share their stories to help normalize the reality of infertility. De-stigmatize this disease and get the funding, insurance coverage and support that these couples deserve.

Informed consent is permission granted in the knowledge of the possible consequences, typically that which is given by a patient to a doctor for treatment with full knowledge of the possible risks and benefits.

It is what gives the birther autonomy over their body. It is the difference between having a positive or negative birth experience.

When you have all the facts, details, risks and benefits you are able to make a well-informed decision and be confident in that decision.

You are #1 on your birth team. Find a supportive medical provider to help you feel supported, heard, and cared for. The feeling of trust and safety in the birth room is incredibly important to have a satisfying experience.

🤰🏽Stretch Marks⠀

About 90% of people will experience stretch marks in pregnancy.⠀

Here’s what you need to know..⠀

1. You can’t stop them or prevent them. Genetics play a huge role in whether or not you will gain these tiger stripes.⠀
2. Keep hydrated. Drink plenty of water and moisturize. Although these won’t change whether or not you get stretch marks, it will change the discomfort of stretching skin.⠀
3. They can range in size and color. ⠀
4. Some stretch marks will fade and others may be more noticeable. ⠀
5. The best time to help them fade is when they are still red.⠀

Stretch marks are just proof that your body is a-fricken-mazing. However they appear on your body wear them proud🐯⠀

As we approach April Fools Day please be kind and sensitive to the fact that (to the infertility/ pregnancy loss community) pregnancy is never a joke. ⠀

🤰🏽Early Pregnancy Symptoms:⠀

While some people experience symptoms as early as the day of their missed period, others won’t experience any. Every pregnancy is different, every body is different. ⠀

✔️Missed period.⠀
- This is usually the first sign of a possible pregnancy and the best time to get an accurate reading on an at-home pregnancy test. I like (not sponsored) ⠀

✔️Spotting.⠀
- Spotting right around your period can be a sign of implantation bleeding. Usually this blood is a little darker in color and is just enough to stain the toilet paper.⠀

✔️Mild cramping.⠀
- Cramping can also be cause by implantation. This is when the embryo burrows deeper into the uterine lining. Also, the changes in hormones and growing uterus can cause mild cramping all throughout pregnancy. ⠀

✔️Fatigue.⠀
- Your body is busy producing so many hormones! This is what causes fatigue. It takes a lot of energy to build a baby!⠀

✔️Frequent urination.⠀
- The pregnancy hormone (HCG) increases blood flow to your kidneys making them more efficient and you running to the toilet more often.⠀

✔️Breast changes.⠀
- Your body is flooded with hormones in the first trimester and part of those hormone’s job is to get your breasts ready to produce milk. Bloodflow to this area can cause breast tenderness, tingling, sharp pains, ni**le sensitivity, more visible blue veins, darkened and more bumpy areola.⠀

✔️Nausea/ Food aversions.⠀
- Nausea is caused again by (you guessed it) an increase in hormones. Food aversions are theorized to be a protective measure of staying away from foods that may potentially be spoiled or contain something that the body doesn’t want but there is no real evidence to support that. ⠀
