We encourage our volunteers to not just shadow, but also observe various steps and diagnostic tests, and to learn how to perform various tests in the clinic - for e.g., checking patients vision, eye pressure, using the diagnostic machines such as OCT and Autoref.

Obviously, this is not allowed from day one, but once we believe that the volunteer has demonstrated a tendency to work hard and be involved in the clinic, as well wanting to learn.

Those volunteers then go on to learning new skillsets in the clinic, including performing various tests and using the machines.

The volunteers have to know that the machines are expensive and fragile (and hence handled carefully), and hence learning to use the machine is a privilege for them.

In the pictures, Salma is using the autorefractor that she has learnt to use in the clinic, while Aidan is working on the OCT machine, with Rene teaching him the use while being a test patient.

Thank you to all the volunteers who have and continue to make a significant difference in the OCEP clinic. We value your time and commitment.

The group photo from our clinic yesterday.

Dr. Matthew Wade, Cornea and Cataract Specialist at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute and Associate Professor at UC Irvine School of Medicine, was the Provider yesterday.

Apart from other patients, Dr. Wade was focused on reviewing patients who need cataract and pterygium surgery. Patients who have advanced disease will be scheduled for surgery by him in the coming weeks. They need to undergo lab tests and medical clearance before they are scheduled for surgery. This process is handled by Gaby, Nathalie and Ruby at the clinic.

Thank you so much, Dr. Wade. We value your time and effort.

Thank you also to all the staff and volunteers who came to the clinic to help, work and support the patients, with some of you coming in at the last minute request. We appreciate your help and support, and value what you do for the patients. Thank you Ivonne, Gaby, Ayaan, Salma, Meet, Aidan, Nathalie, NIlan, Sophia, Whitney, Yadira, and others.

Today’s OCEP surgical cases are being performed by Dr. Marjan Farid, Chief of Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Ocular Surface Disease Program, and Vice Chair of Ophthalmic Faculty at the UCI Health Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, as well as Professor of Ophthalmology at the UC Irvine School of Medicine.

We are deeply grateful to Dr. Farid for sharing her immense expertise and experience in providing advanced surgical care and expanding access to sight-restoring procedures for the patients we serve through OCEP. Her dedication to patient care, education, and innovation continues to make a meaningful impact in our community.

Dr. Farid also serves on the Board of OCEP, and we sincerely thank her for her continued leadership, support, and commitment to our mission.

We also appreciate the help that Dr. Faris Ghosheh and his team provide to us in terms of access to surgical facilities at Advanced Eye Medical Group. Thank you Dr. Ghosheh!

Gaby, our surgical coordinator, is at site managing patients, completing documents and interacting with the Surgeon, while Lloyd, Medical Student at California University of Science and Medicine is able to observe Dr. Farid in surgery. Thank you both.

Last Friday at OCEP was dedicated to our Surgical Pre-Op Assessment Clinic 🩺👁️

We were as always honored to have Dr. Faris Ghosheh, Ophthalmologist and Cornea Specialist from Advanced Eye Medical Group, in clinic evaluating patients with cataracts and pterygium—many of whom are now one step closer to receiving sight-restoring surgery.

Dr. Ghosheh, your continued commitment and generosity make a lasting impact. Thank you for creating a pathway for our patients to access the surgical care they need.

A big thank you as well to our incredible personnel and volunteers - Gaby, Erika, Isha, Priya, and Maddie - for keeping the clinic running smoothly and supporting our patients every step of the way.

Together, we are turning access into action and care into outcomes. 💙

What can we say to the Providers who carve time out of their already busy days to show up, care, and give back - except thank you, over and over again.

Your dedication doesn’t go unnoticed. Every patient you see, every hand you hold, every moment you spend teaching or listening makes a lasting impact far beyond the clinic walls. You are the heart of this mission.

A million thank you's still wouldn’t be enough - but we’ll keep saying it anyway. 💙

In the clinic, some of the most meaningful learning happens in real time - right at the exam chair, or close to it.

When providers take a moment to explain what they’re seeing, walk through their thought process, or involve volunteers in patient care, it transforms observation into true understanding.

Volunteers aren’t just watching - they’re learning how to think, how to connect with patients, and how to approach clinical decision-making.

These moments build confidence, spark curiosity, and make complex concepts feel tangible.

For many volunteers, it’s their first glimpse into what practicing healthcare really looks like, and those experiences often shape their future paths.

A few minutes of teaching can leave a lasting impact - turning a single clinic day into a meaningful step in someone’s journey in healthcare.

In the picture, Dr. Ediriwickrema, Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Specialist at UCI Health Gavin Herbert Eye Institute and UC Irvine School of Medicine, takes time to teach those who shadowed her in the clinic yesterday. Thank you Doctor for your time and for sharing your skills with those who wish to follow in your footsteps.
