✨ That’s a wrap! ✨
Today marks the end of the very first B.Spoke Speech Therapy R Intensive, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Over the past 3 weeks, these students showed up ready to work, challenge themselves, and build new speech motor patterns for one of the most complex sounds in our language. Their hard work, consistency, and determination led to incredible growth, and it has been so rewarding to be part of their journey.

A huge thank you to the families who trusted me with their children’s speech therapy goals and committed to the intensive process. Your support and participation played a major role in your child’s success.

Thank you for making the first-ever R Intensive such a success. 💚

💡Ever try a metronome in speech therapy?

External rhythmic cues have been shown to support motor timing and coordination by providing a predictable temporal framework for movement ex*****on. In speech therapy, a metronome can help students release an over-elongated /r/, maintain a consistent pace, and build more automatic transitions between speech movements.

Ever have a student who finally achieves a beautiful vocalic or initial /r/, but then hangs onto it for way too long?
"Airrrrrrrrrplane."
"Carrrrrrrrr."

The challenge isn't producing the /r/ anymore. The challenge is transitioning efficiently into and out of it.

These students often become so focused on maintaining the tongue shape and tension needed for an accurate /r/ that the movement doesn't feel automatic yet.

The result? A perfectly accurate /r/ that gets stretched out longer than it needs to be.

When I encounter this, I shift the focus from sound acquisition to movement efficiency.
Rather than drilling words over and over, I borrow principles from Speech Motor Chaining (SMC) and ReST (Rapid Syllable Transition Training) to target rapid, flexible transitions through structured syllable practice.

🧵 The Progression: Building Faster Transitions
1️⃣ CV Rapid Fire (Raw-Raw-Raw)
Start with a simple consonant-vowel sequence using a low, retracted vowel that pairs well with /r/. The goal is a quick, staccato rhythm—hit the sound and move on.

2️⃣ VC Precision (Ar-Ar-Ar)
Now make /r/ the destination. Practice arriving at and releasing the /r/ efficiently rather than sustaining it.

3️⃣ Vowel Agility (Raw-Ree, Raw-Ree)
Introduce rapid shifts between different vowel contexts. This encourages the tongue to adapt quickly while maintaining a stable /r/ production.

4️⃣ Adding a Natural Endpoint (Rock-Rock-Rock) Pair the /r/ with a stop consonant. The stop provides a clear endpoint to the movement sequence, encouraging a shorter and more efficient /r/.

🔬 Why This Works
➡️ Speech Motor Chaining
Speech Motor Chaining systematically builds movement accuracy and automaticity by progressing from simple speech units to increasingly complex targets while maintaining a high number of successful productions.

➡️ ReST-Inspired Principles
Borrowing concepts from ReST—such as rapid transitions, pseudo-word practice, and movement flexibility—helps shift attention away from familiar word-level habits and toward the movement transitions themselves.

When we temporarily remove meaningful words from the equation, students can focus on how the sounds move together rather than how they've always said the word before.

💡 Session Takeaway
Once a student demonstrates an accurate /r/, therapy isn't always about getting the sound correct anymore.
Sometimes the goal is teaching the motor system how to transition into and out of that sound more quickly, smoothly, and automatically.

🎉 Day 1 of the B.Spoke Speech Therapy Summer R Intensive is complete! 🎉

Today was all about discovery and creating a personalized plan for success.

During our first session, we completed a comprehensive R assessment to identify each student's strongest and most stimulable /r/ sound. We explored different tongue placements, listened for what worked best, and gathered valuable information to help guide treatment over the next three weeks.

One of the most important parts of successful speech therapy is understanding that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Every child learns differently, and today's assessment helps ensure that each session is tailored to the individual child's needs, strengths, and learning style.

Now that we have our roadmap, we're ready to begin building consistent, accurate /r/ productions and confidence in communication! 💪🗣️

I can't wait to see the progress these students make throughout the intensive!

✨ Why I Focus on Proprioception in R Therapy ✨

Most people think speech therapy is all about hearing the sound…
But for /R/?

It’s really about feeling it.

When I work on /R/, I’m not just telling kids where to put their tongue, I’m helping them feel what their tongue is doing.
✔️ How much tension is needed
✔️ Which parts of the tongue are working
✔️ How everything coordinates together

Because once a child can feel their oral movements…
👉 Producing a correct /R/ isn’t guesswork anymore
👉 Repeating it becomes easier
👉 Carryover happens faster

This is why I focus so heavily on proprioception in my sessions.
It’s not just about getting the sound once;
It’s about helping kids truly understand their speech so they can own it.

That’s when real progress happens.

If your child is stuck on /R/, they may need better awareness.

Mastering the Tricky R!

Does your child struggle with words like “squirrel,” “world,” or “Shirley”? You’re not alone, there’s a reason these words feel like a total tongue-twister!

👅 Why is it so hard?
These words require the tongue to make quick, precise movements, almost like it’s riding a roller coaster. It has to shift rapidly between different positions (like moving from an R to an L), all in one smooth motion.

💡 The “RL” combination (like in “girl” or “world”) is especially challenging because the tongue has to completely change its shape and airflow almost instantly, it’s one of the most difficult sound transitions in English.

Many of these words also include both W and R sounds, which adds another layer of difficulty.

🎢 What’s happening inside the mouth?
Think of the tongue like a roller coaster. To say these words, it has to:
• Climb into a tight, controlled “R” position
• Twist mid-word to transition to another sound
• Drop quickly to finish the word smoothly

🧠 The internal tug-of-war
For children with phonological impairments, this isn’t just retraining the brain, it’s reprogramming it. In many cases, sounds like /r/ and /l/ may be produced as /w/ due to well-established speech patterns (phono processes), so the brain has to work to build and stabilize new, more accurate sound patterns. When a child tries to produce the correct sound, it has to compete against those well-established pathways.

If your child is struggling with the R sound, my R intensive could be just what they need!
