HDL stands for high-density lipoprotein, and it is the only number on the panel where you want a bigger figure. It carries cholesterol away from the arteries rather than depositing it there.
Below 40 mg/dL is low for men. Below 50 is low for women. The thresholds are genuinely different, which is why a single number on a graphic would be wrong for half the people reading it. Above 60 is considered protective.
The higher your HDL, the lower your risk of heart attack and stroke. Physical activity is one of the more reliable ways to move it, which is part of why the movement post this week matters more than it looks.
It is the one number where a high result is good news.
