According to the American Institute of Stress, “April is recognized as National Stress Awareness Month to bring attention to the negative impact of stress. Managing stress is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. Knowing how to manage stress can improve mental and physical well-being as well as minimize exacerbation of health-related issues.”

Tips to manage stress:
• healthy food, exercise & good sleep
• avoid drugs and alcohol
• talk with others to share your problems & feelings
• recognize when you need help

4-7-8 breathing technique:

As written by the Cleveland Clinic, “The late Buddhist monk Thích Nhất Hạnh once wrote, “Breathing in, I calm body and mind. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment, I know this is the only moment.”

The 4-7-8 breathing technique is a style of intentional breathwork that can calm your mind and body. Though popularized in 2015 by integrative medicine specialist Andrew Weil, MD, it has ancient roots in the yogic practice of pranayama, or focusing on the breath.

The gist of it goes like this:

•Inhale through your nose for 4 counts.
•Hold your breath for 7 counts.
•Exhale through your mouth for 8 counts.”

Benefits include: calm your mind, reduce stress and anxiety through activation of parasympathetic nervous system, improve sleep, decrease heart rate and blood pressure.

The more you practice the more you benefit!
