I know holiday 🇺🇸 weekends can be a hard time for those of us who struggle with food and our bodies; I’ve been down that road tooooo many times to count. However, I hope I can still give you a few tips to create a little less angst and a little more peace as you navigate a weekend with family and cookouts. 🌭
Tip #1: Understand that logically you cannot and will not change the shape or size of your body after one day of eating. Yes, your weight on a scale may fluctuate slightly which is normal, and thus leads me to my first tip– Don’t weigh yourself. “The scale can in one moment devalue days, weeks, and even months of progress” and keep you preoccupied with your body all day long. Put the scale away.
Tip #2: In most families, talk about weight, dieting, or body shape is bound to come up. If the conversation feels triggering, or you find yourself comparing or going back to what look like, simply get up and move to another conversation elsewhere. You can also nod, not respond, and/or change the subject by asking them another question about themselves.
Tip #3: Honor your hunger cues and try not to show up to the cookout ravenously hungry. Instead, nourish yourself beforehand with a variety of food groups. When you’re ready to eat at the picnic, make yourself a proper plate and sit down mindfully to enjoy it. Practice giving yourself unconditional permission (no guilt) to eat whatever sounds good to you.
>> Give these a try and let me know what you think! And don’t forget, we are not striving for perfection, and we aren’t using calories or pounds as signs of progress. Instead, each day and each eating experience is an opportunity to learn and grow in the healing process.
