This has been such a long time coming but I finally got my first dose of the COVID vaccine! And in honor of this event, I want to share my COVID story.
When I was 17 weeks pregnant, I got COVID-19.
The day before I was scheduled to get my first vaccine dose back in March, my husband tested positive for COVID-19. Because I had a high exposure risk from him, I had to cancel my vaccine appointment and stay home and isolate for 14 days. After 6 days of isolation, I started to develop symptoms and also tested positive. Fortunately, my symptoms were mild- congestion, runny nose, cough, fatigue, and loss of taste.
As for how it changed the course of my pregnancy, I went from low risk to moderate/high risk. Having COVID-19 while pregnant increases risk for placenta blood clots which can be detrimental for healthy fetal growth. I was instructed to take baby aspirin daily until the rest of my pregnancy and had additional growth ultrasounds at 24 and 28 weeks. Fortunately at my 28 week ultrasound, no placenta or growth abnormalities were detected so I was given the green light to stop the additional monitoring. As for getting the vaccine, I was instructed to wait 3 months due to natural immunity and possible worse adverse reactions to the vaccine.
I consider myself lucky because I never had a fever, didn't have to go to the hospital, had a safe place to isolate, my job was protected, and I had my husband to take care of me at home because he was already sick.
I’m in a Facebook group with women who have/had COVID while pregnant and many of them have stories about being hospitalized. This virus is no joke and I feel so fortunate and privileged to be able to get the vaccine for not only myself but for my unborn son. I’m also in a research study looking at COVID and pregnancy and feel proud to contribute information to the growing body of research on this virus. Bring on the antibodies! 🦠
